I am on a quest to turn family lore into real life details.

Felinfach > Aberaeron > My 2nd great grandfather being born (1842) on ship in the port of Aberaeron > Immigration to Canada and then to the US and the State of Ohio where a large number of Welsh folks settled.

Living in the Felinfach area was my 3rd great grandfather, Charles Evan Evans and we believe he married a Mary Thomas. We are not sure when they married (before 1842)

My 2nd Great Grandfather also Charles Evan Evans was born (at least that is the lore) on ship in the port of Aberaeron.  Siblings may have been born in Wales – John, Nell and Sally (before 1842).

A Great Uncle of mine, also Charles Evan Evans visited Felinfach in 1981 and had drinks with a Wynn Davies and talked about the possibilities of our Evans ancestors.

A removed cousin of mine, Garnet Deem and her children Anne and Henry visited in the 1950’s  and were able to add their names to the Church record.

The Church looks to be St. Michaels / Ystrad Aeron from the pictures that I have and the retelling of visits to Felinfach.

In any event, I am looking to break through the Felinfach Brick Wall of Evans Lore for Charles Evan Evans and Mary Thomas. Is there a record of marriage on or around the late 1830’s or early 1840’s along with any other info about other children, the greater allied families, and further ancestry?

Help or direction would be tremendously appreciated.

Thanking you in advance,

Todd Evans

I agree, rosie99, the 1841 Census should help, also what year did they arrive in Ohio?

Have you tried the Priest in Charge at St. Michael's, Ystrad Aeron or investigated at the Ceredigion Archives at Aberystwyth?

Thanks for the help so far !

I sent an email to Priest in charge (Rev. Hill) as the starting to point to hopefully locate some details to leverage in other research.

Just don't have much to go on.
  • Arrived in Canada 1842
  • Don't have anything on Charles Evan Evans (3g grandfather) and Mary Thomas
  • Pickup with Charles Evan Evans (2g grandfather) in Ohio around 1860
  • Documentation for marriage of Charles Evan Evans and Elizabeth Meyers in 1868 (Urbana, Ohio)

I notice on the Family Search website the marriage is listed between Evan Charles Evans & Lyzzie Myers on 9th Feb 1868 at Champaign, Ohio.

There are THREE births of Evan Evans registered at Aberayon (old spelling of Aberaeron) in the Dec Qtr of 1841 Vol. 27 page 1, 7 & 10 and TWO registered in the Sep Qtr of 1842, Vol. 27 page 1 although none show Charles as a middle name.

It seems on the Find-a-grave website Charles Evans burial is recorded at Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio. It records his birth in Canada October 1842 and death on 21 Jan 1895. It also confirms his wife as Elizabeth Myers born 5 Sep 1842 at Cincinnati and death on 13 Mar 1937 Urbana with her burial at the same cemetery.

With apologies if you already know this.

No apologies necessary.   (BTW the photos on find-a-grave are mine !)

We are dialed in with tons of info back to Charles Evan Evans and Elizabeth.

It's his parents and farther back that we are stymied.
