Trying to find a death notice for a Thomas Rutherford who died in the USA sometime after 1875.
He was married  to an Elizabeth Young and together they had a son Thomas A Rutherford who was born c 1874 but designated a British subject? Have tried to find a death for the father but no luck, so any help much appreciated.

At this time, the status of "British Subject" was inherited only through the father's side, so this does suggest that (if the census information is correct), that Thomas was born in the UK somewhere.

Just trying to narrow down the details:
marriage in 1870?
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTJQ-ZNB
son Charles, 1870?
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYT4-76K
daughter Elizabeth, 1873?
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYGK-955

This would limit their move to the US to about 1873/74.  Did Elizabeth (and the other children, if they're the correct ones), return to Scotland? Did Elizabeth re-marry, and if so, when/where?

Unfortunately state-wide registration of records in Maine didn't start until the 1890s.

Thanks for those replies. I have been unable to pin down Thomas's death or even when they might have entered the USA. But it looks as if she has fled the scene after returning for the USA, Her children are spread around various relatives, but where she herself is goodness only knows. The mystery deepens.
