Marriage lookup please Anderson / Ford 1790s

Hi, would anyone be able to help me, or point me in the right direction to get more information on a marriage between the following people.

James Anderson and Elizabeth Ford

James b.1773??  Elizabeth 1777??

The details that i have found may not be correct.

What i found was this date and information.

First born was

ANDERSON, Isabel

Birth : 12 MAR 1798 Duns / Edrom, Berwick, Scotland

So maybe married 1 or 2 years earlier than that?


I also have not been able to confirm their dates of birth or this marriage date.


I have found all the information for their children...all born around Edrom, but am not sure where they died.

A couple of their children moved to Selkirk but can't trace them there either.

Any additional help or pointers would be greatky appreciated.

Please note i have poted this query a few years ago and was just hoping for more information.

Have you looked on Scotlands People Old Parish Records (OPR's)?

Hi Carole, thanks for the reply, yes i have tried the pre 1855 opr's there but can't seem to find anything.

iv426 I have a large FOORD/FORD berwickshire tree but not one Elizabeth amongst them. Around that time they were FOORDs and then drifted to FORDs so always try that spelling. Eliz is not in Gordon Cemetery with ours!keep trying.

Hi Alan, thanks for the reply, was there any of your Fords that had any link to the burgher church in Duns?


All the children of James Anderson and Elizabeth Ford have been christened etc "before the burgher congregation in duns" so was maybe hoping her family may have gone to the same church?

Probably a long shot though.

no marriage show up in the OPR, but if it was an irregular or Non-conformist marriage you would have to look elsewhere like in the church records (if you know it) or court/civil records. Elizabeth may be a lot younger that James Anderson.

but could be a common law marriage. (still legal in Scotland)

Also the record do show their kids - only one Isobel dated 19 Mar

I am not sure what irregular or Non-conformist marriages are, i will have to research that.

The later children were Baptised before the Burgher congregation, is that the same thing?

I'd never heard of the burgher's and Anti Burgher's until recently so need to research what all that is as well
