Attwood alias Hart
« on: Thursday 28 May 15 09:27 BST (UK) »
Richard Attwood was baptised 23 March 1695 in Coaley. His father was John Attwood, alias Hart.
Joseph Attwood was also baptised in 1705 . his father was given as John Attwood, alias Hart.
There is also a Hannah in 1707.

Why would someone have an alias? When searching for this family further, such as when looking for John Attwood/Hart's marriage, should I search for John Attwood or John Hart?

Hi Betty,
I suspect that John ATTWOOD was born out of wedlock and that his putative father's surname was HART and his mother's surname was ATTWOOD.
The Gloucestershire PRs are now available on A******y and you can check the actual PRs for St Bartholomew, Coaley. Be warned, checked the actual parish and NOT the person check, as these records are highly suspect, having been transcribed in China. The actual parish records have been transcribed and are an exact facsimile of the PR.

There's an article here that explains some of the reasons people carried an alias:

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/DevonMisc/AliasesDiscriminant.html

It was quite common in the West of England.

Hi
Just to add that this looks like John's marriage at St Mary in the Crypt Gloucestershire
John Attwood of Coaley and Elizabeth Minnett of Cam 26.6.1695.

Also son John 14.12.1702 at Coaley
Thomas son of John Hort ale boody? buried 8.5.1710

Earlier at Coaley I can only see
John Attwood s of Richard and Sarah 13.12.1690
Joseph Hortt s of John and Elizabeth 24.3.1680 buried 27.4.1681

Judging by one of my ancestors it would be best to search under both surnames.

In my ancestry a Mary Hart gave birth to an illegitimate son (by Thomas Haines according to the baptism record) who was referred to as Thomas Hart alias Haines on his baptism record.  Mary and Thomas senior then married before they had any more children but the baptisms of those were variously recorded as Haines alias Hart or vice versa.  The either-or alias scenario was carried over by the children when they married including Thomas junior and for the males continued for another generation until they all settled for Haines.  Thomas junior's children's baptisms were variously recorded under both alias scenarios.  Most bizarre.
