Hi, Thomas Scriven was born in St.Martin Le Grande in the City of Westminster circa 1814.

If anyone is visiting or has access to the Westminster Archive Centre, I would be most grateful if someone could try finding his baptism in any of these parishes.

St.Botolph Aldersgate
St.Ann and St.Agnes, Gresham Street
Christ Church, Newgate
St.Vedast Foster Lane

He became a cordwainer, so it is possible his father was also a cordwainer. I would also like to find his parents. It's a big ask, but any help would be much appreciated. regards Carolmc

FindMyPast has Westminster baptisms.

But the only one I can find is:
Thomas <no surname>
Born 1814, baptism 1815 at St James Piccadilly, parents Thomas & Mary

You'll need credits to see the details?! ;D
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

He may have been baptised elsewhere in London.  :-\

This website seems to have some of the parishes you are after  http://www.parishregister.co.uk/online/london-parish-records

St Martins le Grand is in the City of London not the City of Westminster, are you sure Westminster Archives have the records

Hi thank you for all the replies, now understand it should be City of London!. I've searched Ancestry, FindMyPast and familysearch, but not found anything conclusive. I've also searched London Metropolitan Archives and st.Botolophs Aldersgate is the most likely set of parish records, but St.Anns and St.Agnes appears to need 2 days notice if you want to access the records. I'd no idea it could be so difficult.

My instinct is that the Scriven family may be eastern European and possibly jewish which is why I need to find the Baptism etc. Anyone have ideas please. regards Carolmc

If they were Jewish, there wouldn't be a baptism.

Did your Thomas marry Martha?

If so, when & where?

People of the Jewish faith tend not to marry out.

Hi
Thomas Scriven married Martha Knights 16/1/1834 Little Glemham Suffolk
He is in 1841, 51, 61 and 71 as born 1814, St.Martin le Grande. A cordwainer.
They had 8 children
 bapt. 13/10/6/11/1839 Henstead Annah Maria
bapt. 1842 Marlesford William John
bapt. 22/9/1844 Marlesford Thomas Pain (Payne)

The next 5 children were all baptised on19/8/1860 in Wrentham
Ellen born 3/7/1847
Alfred born 25/9/1849
Jane born12/1/1851
Clarrisa quarter 1 1854
Agnes  quarter 3 1856

Thomas Pain married Jane Cutter 2/1/1875, another interesting fact is that if you follow her fathers line, they are all shepherds.  There are a lot of Ishmaels, Sarahs, Patiences. I haven't fully researched this line, but can't help feeling there's something jewish going on.  I've wondered about St.Martin le Grande and sanctuary and maybe religious persecution  if you look further back in history.

Also there is a visual 'look' (dark hair, dark eyes, unusual nose and swarthy skin) shared by my grandson, daughter in law and her father that has made us all ask where do they come from?

Lots of interesting facts, but no glue!
Carolmc

Hi
In the census returns Thomas is said to be either born St Martin le Grande, which would be in the City of London, as explained, or St Martins, which sounds more like St Martin in the Fields (Westminster). Perhaps he - or somebody at any rate - was confused about this?
If he had a son Thomas Pain Scriven born in Suffolk in 1844, then it's an odd coincidence that there is a baptism indexed of a Thomas Scrivens Pain in St Martin in the Fields in 1814! Parents Thomas + Hannah. It will be on findmypast, I haven't seen the actual record. Baptism date is 4 April 1814 according to Family Search. It might be worth looking into perhaps.
