Obituary REES June 1954
« on: Sunday 31 May 15 14:44 BST (UK) »
I have found a Death Entry for George REES, Aged 85yrs, June 1954, Swansea Registration District, Volume 8b Page 592.

I would like to establish if this is George REES, Born 18 Welcome Street Swansea in 1869, Parents Evan and Margaret REES.

He Married Sarah Ann (DAVIES?) in Swansea in 1892. (Volume 11a Page 1381).

On the 1911 Census George Rees + Family are living at 43 High Street Clydach. They are still there in 1918, as I found this entry in 'The 'Cambrian Daily Leader', May 30th 1918:

'Mr. and Mrs. George Rees, 43 High-street, Clydach, have been officially advised that their youngest son, Lance.-corporal. Austin Rees (Cheshire Regiment), has been missing since between April 10th and 20th last. His elder brother, Private. Ivor Rees, is serving in Mesopotamia'.

In 1927, George REES of 43 High Street Clydach is the Informant on his Father's Death Cert, (Evan Rees 1837 - 1927). (I gather that 43 High Street Clydach is now a Post Office).

Before ordering the Death Cert, I wonder if some kind person could check for me if there was an Obituary for George REES in June 1954? (As it's quite a common name, I want to be sure that I have the right person).

I'm guessing that either The West Glamorgan Archives or the Swansea Library would have papers for that timescale?

Many Thanks,
Romilly.

Thanks so much Mar!

Why didn't I think of looking at Probate? Doh...(!)

Ivor Rees was the son of George Rees, Born 1894. This is the family on the 1911 Census, living at 43 High Street, Clydach, Glamorgan:

REES, GEORGE    HEAD    MARRIED           42yrs    HOUSE DECORATOR    BORN MORRISTON GLAMORGANSHIRE

REES, SARAH ANN    WIFE    MARRIED           38yrs Born      LLANGYFELACH GLAMORGANSHIRE

REES, IVOR    SON    SINGLE           17yrs    HOUSE PAINTER, Born    AMMANFORD, CARMARTHENSHIRE

REES, AUSTIN    SON    SINGLE           14yrs    SCHOOL    Born AMMANFORD CARMARTHENSHIRE

REES, LENA    DAUGHTER    SINGLE           12yrs    SCHOOL    AMMANFORDI CARMARTHENSHIRE

REES, MARGARET    DAUGHTER    SINGLE          2yrs Born      CLYDACH ON TAWE, GLAMORGANSHIRE

REES, GLYN    SON    SINGLE     4yrs    SCHOOL
Born CLYDACH ON TAWE GLAMORGANSHIRE

REES, OLWEN    DAUGHTER    SINGLE          11 MONTHS    Born   CLYDACH ON TAWE GLAMORGANSHIRE.

I don't know why the other children aren't mentioned in the Will, - perhaps I will have to order it to find out...

Many Thanks,
Romilly.

Glad I could help Romilly.
I wonder if Ivor is named as the eldest child to administer his estate?

Yes Mar,

I think that's the most likely explanation...

I've now found a Probate Entry for Ivor Rees, who died in 1960, leaving his effects to his Widow Margaret Elizabeth Rees. It looks like his brother Austin Rees also died in 1960, -
Death for an Austin Rees June qtr 1960 age 50 Swansea Vol 8b page 707.

Thanks again for your help.

Best Wishes, Romilly.
