More likely that he was the father; maybe his occupation kept him away for weeks/months and that was the only time that they could marry.

WW1 did sometimes get in the way of couples getting married as soon as they might have wished.

The marriage could have taken place in early October and the birth in mid-late March, so not necessarily a heavily pregnant bride. Only the certificates will give the dates.
