Can anyone help with a marriage look up or pointer please?
« on: Thursday 04 June 15 20:18 BST (UK) »
My husband 3 x great grandfather Henry William Clements was born in the Isle of Wight in 1823  but was resident in Berwick on the 1841 census.  His wife Rachel is listed on census's as being born in Berwick but I can't find any reference to their wedding or her maiden name.

Some of their children were also born in Berwick,
Christianna around 1847 and Charles in 1850 before they moved further down the Northumberland coast.

I presume that Berwick comes under Scotland as I can find all details of their children and their children's marriages with my Find my Past subscription, but I'm drawing a blank with the marriage and baptisms of their children.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

Have you sent off for the childrens birth certificates?

When you get the Birth cert, you will have additional information, such as address where they were born, trade or profession of father, place of registration.

All of which may give you extra pieces of the jigsaw.

Berwick upon Tweed is actually in Northumberland - the border is north of the town.  So the entry in 1851 for Rachel which says Berwick-upon Tweed, Berwick is misleading  :-\

One of the children's birth certificates will give you her maiden name, since they are all born after civil registration.

Checking Berwick upon Tweed baptisms for Rachel born cir 1824 on FamilySearch gives possibles:

Rachel Lindsay https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NY8L-SDS
Rachel Crow https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW3S-M1M
Rachel Ogilvie https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N6JT-CFG  (I see this one's mother was Christian, like Henry & Rachel's eldest daughter, and the father is Alexander like their son.)
Rachel Ann Swanson https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NBRP-64B

Two baptisms for their children in Berwick: Charles https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N6JR-FVR
Christian https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N6J5-R9Z

Nell, thank you so much for that.  I only came across family search.org yesterday when another person posted a link for this family further on in the lineage.  Already I am amazed at how much family information it pulls together.

I thought the children might hold the answer to Rachel's maiden name and parents when I saw that their children were named after themselves, Henry's father, mother and sister but went down the wrong route.  I thought their son, named after Henry also had a family name, he is Henry William Laing and thought this must be Rachel's maiden name but was drawing a blank.

Thank you for highlighting this connection.
