I'll do a marriage search for James' parents and see if they are Wm McLay and Janet Sneddon.
Sage.............
From what I'm reading, you haven't actually got James (1893) birth cert
James McLay said to have been born 20 April 1893 in Glasgow to William McLay and Janet Sweddon
This should be your next step as it will not only give parent's names but also date & place of marriage. With that info. you can narrow down your search to that particular area & if there is a transcription error on the index it won't be so costly as it would without knowing year & area. Remember to leave a couple of yrs either side as a marriage at end of yr won't be indexed until the following yr & if father registered birth he may have made an error with the actual marriage date (a man thing)
I have an example of a transcription error on the index.................
On the index the name is listed as John "McRay" whereas the actual image has the correct name as John "MacKay". His bride is Mary MacKinnon (K) on both are the same. The (") below the "c" signifies an "a" as in "Mac"
