Getting a rough age of a building in Selkirk
« on: Sunday 07 June 15 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hi all, are you allowed to post a google maps pic of a building here for people to judge it's age?

I have 2 buildings in Selkirk, Scotland that i think may have been around when my ancestors lived and worked there in the 1800s but not that knowledgeable on architecture from the period.

If it is ok i will post 2 pics here?

I personally do not have a problem seeing the buildings on here. I presume your motivation is not commercial?
This post is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws. Unfortunately my preferred method of writing (Parker Quink on Basildon Bond) cannot be used.

OK thanks, no this is not for any commercial reasons this is family history research, if you look on the 1823 map of Selkirk you can see the names Emond for those 2 particular houses/shops.

If people aren't happy that the pics are here i can take them down.

The buildings look to be about that age 1800s?

Just one thing is that the bigger building is where it shows the Emond family being Bakers, does that building look too grand for a bakery/residence?

it says they were Gingerbread Bakers, did that mean in those days they just made gingerbread or normal bread etc as well as?

From what i can see on the census information it seems that each family generation takes over that building.

thanks

In the pics the 1st one it is the white painted/plastered building, the 2nd the one that is now the Samaritans.

Just another question, in that bigger building i can see a number 8 with 2 crosses either side?

Like this x8x ?  would they have carved street numbers in those days? or does that mean something else?

Sorry but the picture was blurred on the top.

And hopefully this link work

http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400056#zoom=5&lat=5918&lon=3808&layers=BT

This is the 1823 Selkirk map showing houses/buildings in those location belonged to Emonds who are my ancestors.

I think the buildings look old enough to have been there at that time and not something built afterwards?

This might help

http://data.historic-scotland.gov.uk/pls/htmldb/f?p=2200:15:0::::BUILDING:43829

Also this list, which isn't ordered alphabetically so you need to hunt through it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_listed_buildings_in_Selkirk,_Scottish_Borders

Think I know of a photo/illustration which might help.

p.s. a few of my ancestors are listed on the same map but no Emonds in my line as far as I know
