Parents of Samuel Dalby?
« on: Sunday 07 June 15 19:34 BST (UK) »
Evening All,

Wondering if you could help me with my latest headache...Samuel Dalby.

Samuel Dalby was born c1811.
He lived in central Leicester. (Navigation Street)
On the 1841 census it stated "Y" to being born in the country of Leicestershire.
On the 1851 census it says he was born Radford, Nottinghamshire.

He has a brother Edward Dalby born c1807, same set up 1841 census says he was born in county, 1851 census states Radford, Nottinghamshire. Also living in Leicester.(Married to Charlotte Nicks)

Samuel married Elizabeth Tracey in 1836, St Margaret's, Leicester. According to the transcript (not seen original)  he was a widower at the time.

Most likely first marriage is to Mary Mount 1832 Leicester.  I can find one child from this union Elizabeth born (well christened) 1834. This is still a hunch I am working on. I can't find a death for Mary Pre-1836 (Samuel's second marriage date)  or locate Elizabeth on 1841 census with family or a death for her so this calls into question whether I have the right first wife.

My primary aim is to trace Samuel's parents but any help untangling the first wife dilemma would be great.

Thanks

How do you know that Samuel and Edward were brothers?

There was a death in 1853 of Samuel Dalby of Belgrave Gate - was this your Samuel? (I see he was at Belgrave Gate in 1841). This Samuel was apparently 48 when he died so giving a suggested yob of 1805, which fits with the 1841 census.

So - there are no suitable Samuel D*lby baptisms on the Notts disc (looking for Dolby as well as Dalby). There was a Samuel Dalby bapt in St Mary, Leic, in 1804. son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dalby, but there are no Edwards mentioned for this couple. (James, Samuel, Sarah, William between 1801 - 1808).
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Hi,

Thank you for looking into this. ;D

Samuel and Edward are born within a few years of each other, both have Radford as there place of birth on 1851  census and are living a couple of houses away from each other on Navigation Street in 1851. I have no solid proof they are brother's but seems likely.

I think the 1853 death is Samuels.

Edward is still alive 1861 and that census states birth place Leicester again so could be Leicester birth place which seems to fit with your finding although I wonder why the 1851 census says otherwise?  ???

Thomas and Elizabeth have potential but would really like to have found Edward to pull it together

I have his birth anything from 1804 - 1813.

Just having a look round from the info you gave, an Edward Dalby is baptised to John and Ann Nottingham St Mary 21 Dec 1806. There are 2 poss further children, both named Ann, same church, baptisms 18 May 1810 then 14 Oct 1816

Found a burial

LEICESTER ST MARGARET   MARY    DALBY   LEICESTER   13-Jul   1834   age 20
baptism for Elizabeth is 1 Jul

William is as Tacey, so definitely need to check the original marriage and baptism

Census refs are
1841 HO107/60413/42/27
1851 HO107/2089/234/13

and Samuel Welford Road burial

N   390   C    DALBY   SAMUEL   1857   MAY   4   49   12 CHARLOTTE STREET   SAINT MARGARET

but unfortunately this did not throw up poss parents

Just read your post, another burial in the grave is as

DALBY   WILLIAM JACEY   1864   AUG   23   7MTHS   OXFORD STREET   SAINT MARY

the other burials in the grave are 1880 and 1917 so probably unrelated

The Nott St Mary baptisms also included an Isabella in 1808.

The timescale for this family overlaps the Leic St Mary baptisms which included Samuel.
