Dunsdale cottages and Ettrick Mill
« on: Monday 08 June 15 19:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all, i noticed that i have family members listed as living at dunsdale cottages in the 1841 and 1851 census.

For the 1841 the head of the family was listed as a carter (which i think he did in Berwickshire)
But for the 1851 one he is listed as a wool scourer at age 42.

I just wondered if anyone would know if Dunsdale cottages exclusively for Ettrick Mill workers?

If as i am not from the UK what is the best way to see any lists of workers there?

They had a son who died at 12 i was also wondering if he died in the mill in some accident? would they have records for that too?

Hi. Sorry I don't know anything about Dunsdale cottages but searching on the internet I see that the Ettrick Mill was on Dunsdale road.

If you can give us the name and year that the young boy died there may be a newspaper record - if there are any to be found at that time in that area.

The following website is where the local archives are kept. Perhaps if you emailed them they could tell you if there are any records from that time.

Good luck with your search.

If you go to the FreeCEN site and find your ancestor there, it will allow you to see the other households in the enumeration book. That will show you their occupations.

Not necessarily - there is many Mills in the Dundaleshaugh area of Selkirk, may be a high proportion of  them could be tied cottages to the Mill

Hi lv426,

My husband has Anderson's residing in Dunsdale Haugh around that time who were also Mill workers.  Can I ask who Alexander's parents were and any other detail of them and his siblings?

If you haven't already viewed it, here is the Google Street View of the Mill

Edit: Think I've just found them - George and Sarah with a number of children with Alexander aged 10?  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that there is a link with our Anderson's.
