Old Infirmary Yard, Leeds
« on: Tuesday 09 June 15 00:47 BST (UK) »
I recently saw a member's post of a city plan of Leeds circa 1910.  Unfortunately my inexperience with Rootschat leaves me unable to locate the post.
My question is, does anyone know where Old Infirmary Yard, Kirkgate, Leeds was located?  The map showed Kirkgate but did not bear enough small detail to show where Old Infirmary Yard was situated.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Jackson, Pegg

[I do have a Leeds map showing the period 1890, but due to copyright I am not allowed to post]

A warm welcome to Rootschat

Historical Directories   http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/cdm/landingpage/collection/p16445coll4

Click on link and click on "Advanced search"
Search for "old infirmary yard"
Select Kelly's Directory of Leeds 1888 - pages 28 and 29 cover Kirkgate and refer to Old Infirmary Yard. Will give you a couple of reference points (eg New Market St, Call Lane) to determine which part of Kirkgate you are interested in (the Infirmary moved from there in 1791).

After all that, I have managed to save a small portion of a map showing location of Infirmary Yard but will not allow me to post. (full stop)

Thanks so much, Brian.  Although I was born in Canada and have since returned here, I spent from age 2 to 14 living in Leeds.  I'm sufficiently familiar with the city to get a sense of where Old Infirmary Yard was located.  My grandfather ran away from this address at age 10 and was subsequently incarcerated in Shadwell before being sent to Canada as an indentured servant.  Seeing the map was great.  Thanks again.

This is really interesting.  Thank you so much Hanes, both for the welcome and also the link to the directory.

I have received your request via personal message rn47j re Club Yard.
Club Yard was in an area of Leeds very run down near the Marsh Lane goods dept. (railway)
[My main computer hasn't the facility to clip the main map so I have to do that on my laptop then pass onto main computer via a memory stick.]
Will see how I get on later today!
