Bannons of Tulyallen county Louth
« on: Tuesday 09 June 15 06:16 BST (UK) »
Can any members shed any light on the Bannon family from County Louth?

The 2 names are Patrick Bannon married to Anne Bannon (formerly Cunningham)
On the 1911 census for County Louth their children are
Thomas   28    Agricultural labourer
Maggie    25            "
Catherine 14   Scholar      grandaughter.
On the 1901 census it states that Catherine/Kathleen  is a daughter
The 1901 census has Bridie as 21
1911 census - she would have been married - hence absent on the 1911 census. The transcript version has the Residents of a house in Begrath (Monasterboice) Louth. 9 miles from Tullyallen.
With the 1891 census it should have Bridie as 18 plus (another sister or brother).

Pension Search Form gives Patrick's Parents as Thomas and Catharine
http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/details.jsp?id=42195

Patrick increased his age in 1911 in the hope of getting a pension.
Cathleen/Catherine Is possibly their grand daughter as Anne was in her 50s when that child was born BUT The enumerator may have questioned her age in relation to her parents and been told grand daughter to cover the fib. Neither Patrick or Anne could write so the enumerator probably filled in the form or at least added the Grand on daughter.

Where did you get Cunningham as Anne surname?
I'm not finding a matching couple in the marriage index but they may have married elsewhere.

When the RC parish images come online from July 8th it should be possible to find all the children and hopefully more on the parents or if you don't want to wait and are willing to pay RootsIreland may have transcripts of the parish records.

A Patrick Bannon & Anne Cunningham- daughter Catherine born 1872-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG8R-2HP

Wonder if Anne married was before?

Added- 1911 says married 40 years (c1871) and there's an 1871 marriage for a Patrick Bannon in Drogheda with several Annes on the page (none with surname Cunningham but there is an Anne Kinehan)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Looks like Cunningham/Kinehan might be the same name?

1876 birth for a Catherine Bannon- mother Ann Kinnchan (likely Kinechan mistranscribed)

Thankyou all, everything has fallen into place for my friend, Cunningham is indeed Kinehan/Kinechan. It may be that the surname was "Anglicised", if that is the correct term, when the family moved to England.
Quite a lot of English surnames were altered/corrected as people became more literate. In my village we had two brothers with similar, but different surnames due to this, neither would agree the others spelling was correct.
Again thankyou for your time and efforts.

The surname Cunningham was being used by the family at least by 1872 when Catherine was born.
