OCCUPATION ABBREVIATION in 1841 census
« on: Tuesday 09 June 15 07:57 BST (UK) »
Hi there

In the 1841 Scotland Census, Lanarchshire, there is an 11 year old boy described as a "Cab Prin Ap". Can anyone help please with what these abbreviations mean?  Ap = Apprentice?.  Prin= Printing??? Cab????
Cheers

I wonder if it is a mistranscription of Cal[ico] prin[ter's] Ap[prentice]?

Suggestion removed due to dates involved. Wrong era.

Prin Ap is likely to be principal apprentice.

No it was not James Adams but James Campbell and the principal apprentice sounds good. Apparently the family were into the weaving business.

Many thanks everyone for your help.

"Principal" does not make sense. "Calico printer apprentice" gives an occupation before the word apprentice. If you read it as "principal apprentice", then you just have the word "calico", no actual job to be an apprentice in, principal or otherwise.
