Church of St James, Ashwick
« on: Wednesday 10 June 15 09:16 BST (UK) »
I have numerous relatives (Emery & Treasure) who I believe were buried in this churchyard cemetery. Would anyone know if a transcription  of the headstones is available?
Thanks,  Bill.

Hi Bill,
My Somerset & Dorset Family History Society CD lists burials at St James, Ashwick as follows:-
EMERY 1607-1930 & TREASURE 1791-1819. There is every possibility that they also hold a record of the MIs.

FindMyPast has some Somerset MIs. I've no idea how complete their coverage of Ashwick is, but it includes 6 Emorys and no Treasures. The Emorys are in two graves, Charles and Caroline with (presumably their son) Albert, and Edward and Thirza with Artenus William. (The older four all born 1857-1863, the younger two 1885, 1889)

Bill, what date are your Emerys? I too have Emery forebears from Ashwick - two of them, both named James were Parish Clerks there in the 18th and early 19th centuries,

Steve

Would that happen to be my 6xggrandfather, James Emery (1709-1789), and his son, James Emery (1738-1806)?
I understand that they were both Parish Clerks at Ashwick and that there was an issue with the unsatisfactory manner in which James Snr was recording Church records.  I'm not sure of the actual details; perhaps you may be able to enlighten me  ;)

Cheers,   Bill

That's right Bill - James snr. was reprimanded twice for missing entries from the register. His son was very much more accurate (or perhaps the vicar took on the duties himself!). I will send you a PM later in the day with details
