William Melmoth - Durweston - circa 1821
« on: Friday 12 June 15 04:50 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I've been trying to locate a birth/baptism date for my great great grandfather William Melmoth but the closest I can get is a year of around 1821. His mother was born Marianne Melmoth (to Henry Melmoth and Christiana Meader) and as he took his mother's maiden name I'm assuming that he was born out of wedlock. I believe he was born in Durweston...

On his marriage certificate to Louisa Horlock of December 10, 1843 his father was listed as William Hunt. Any help with pinning down a date would be gratefully appreciated!

Regards,
Mario

He is in the Wilson family tree on ancestry - is that your tree?

Hi

In the Durweston parish records there is this baptism

29 June 1823 Durweston ~ William Hunt natural son of Mary Melmer.

In 1821 Henry and Christian(a) baptized a daughter Eliza, their surname was transcribed as MELMER as were a couple of others (Robert and Elizabeth) although earlier baptisms were Melmoth including Mariannes.

Claire, Thanks for that information, it's very much appreciated.  Chempat, I don't know of any Wilsons in our branch of the family tree.

Cheers,
Mario

The Wilson tree has a photo of William's daughter Elizabeth Melmoth, 1859 - 1934,  her daughter Neva Sherlock, 1885, with photo, Neva's husband John Strahan, 1887, with photo, and others.

Thanks for the info regarding the Wilson tree - my great grandmother Martha (1853-1948) was Elizabeth's sister. It would be interesting to see the picture that you mentioned - I guess I'll have to join Ancestry!!

I find it very interesting that Marianne named her son William Hunt - I'm assuming that Hunt is being used as a middle name here - and I note that he was born illegitimately. As William Hunt is named as William's father on the wedding certificate I wonder the reasoning would be behind naming him such... any ideas? "Name and shame", tribute or just an acknowledgment of who the father was?

Cheers,
Mario
