Shortis and Mara Families Carrick-on-Suir
« on: Saturday 13 June 15 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hello all.  Fortunately, I have recently found some information about my husband's great aunt's family on familysearch.org and Ancestry.com and was hoping to find more.  Anastasia Shortis (parents Richard Shortis and Johanna) born abt 1842 was married to John Mara (no parent names) born abt 1839.  Their children were Joanna Mara b 15 Mar 1864, Catherine (great aunt) b 21 Nov 1866, Sarah 20 Jan 1868, Mary 25 Mar 1870, Edmond or Edward 5 Jan 1872 - all born Carrick-on-Suir.  There might also be a Nellie.  Another daughter, Minnie, was born  3 Nov 1883 in New York City.  I cannot find Joanna, Sarah, or Mary in New York and all I see on Ancestry.com are Ireland death indices so cannot tell if they died in Ireland.  Any info on parents or children is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.  Pat

Two possible death records from the Death Civil registration Index
Sarah Mara age 5 1874 Carrick on Suir registration district Volume 9 page 419
Mary Mara age 1 1871 Carrick on Suir Reg. district volume 9 page 358.
You would have to buy the certs (€4 per research cert) to get further details. Note in Irish death cert parents names are not given - usually place age occupation and cause of death, informant's name (often a relative but not necessarily shown as such)

Have you found any immigration records into the United States, they might provide more information - they must have gone between 1873 and 1883

Is mother Anastasia in the 1900 U.S. census? if so, it should say how many children born & how many living-

No, Anastasia died in 1900.  The only censuses I found were for Catherine - after she married my husband's great grandfather's brother.  I found Anastasia and John's names on Catherine's,  Edward's, and Minnie's death certificates and worked backwards from there.  Even then, the last names were mutilated.  I found the Irish indices on Ancestry.com.  i could not find any ship manifests either.  I appreciate your help, aghadowey.

If they settled in New York City then that was the most likely port of entry into the U.S. Have you checked Castle Garden for the family or were there just too many similar names to be sure of a match?

This is interesting:
Shortis households in each county in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1847-64
Kilkenny    1
Tipperary    7
Waterford 1

(paysite)
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&Surname=Shortis&UserID=

So perhaps all these Shortis households in Tipperary could be related.
The surname Shortis seems to have originated from Yorkshire and is a very old one but not according to Irish Library a native Irish name
