Smith - suspicious death, Pontypool, 1900
« on: Sunday 14 June 15 19:17 BST (UK) »
I wonder, I have looked but can't find anything, if anyone has different access to online newspapers, please?  I am trying to find a (suspicious) death of Thomas Smith, apparently in Pontypool, in 1900.

Many Thanks

Hi Welsh Girl
the only thing I can see is a death in 1899 (a year out) of a Pontypool boy aged 13 (William), the son of John Smith, travelling show proprietor. The boy was accidentally shot in the chest.

Looks like this death happened in the Forest of Dean

Closest registered death of that name and place I can see is in 1902 but he was 68 - too old for your chap?

This is a hard one .... I don't know, as I can't find the Marriage entry for them.  I know his name was Thomas Smith, because his name is on their Daughters BC.  However, the Mother became wayward, and eventually, the girl was taken into care, and it is from these records, that Thomas Smith's death was mentioned - I am not convinced this was 100% accurate (as other details that I KNOW weren't).

She goes as Mary Ann Thompson/Thomlinson (MN) /Jones and Smith latterly Mary Ann Smith aka Jones ..

I thought if I could find this "suspicious death" I might be able to piece a bit more of this together ...  have tried some of the possible Marriage entries, but so far they have all come back incorrect ..... like trying to find a needle in a haystack, unfortunately.

The other issue I have, is that as Mary was wayward, she was living in and around Alcester and Pershore (Worcester) too - that was her last known address (no fixed abode).

Her Daughter was born in Monmouth (Cinderhill Street), and her first Husband died in a pit explosion in Llanerch Colliery in 1890.  I have Mary Ann on the 1891 census in Panteg, Pontypool.  I can't find Mary nor her Daughter (born 1893) on the 1901 census, and she was taken into care in 1908 ..

Hi Welsh Girl, another one that has a correct name and year, but recorded over in Aberdare

Aberdare Times - 8th December 1900
DIED ON A SETTLE.—Mrs Whitbread's lodging-house in High-street was the scene of a sudden death on Sunday. A man, Thomas Smith, was staying there, and sat on a settle. He was later on found to be dead. About 50 years of age, Smith, who had suffered for some time of weakness, hailed from Coombe, Wiltshire.

If that newspaper seems like the right fella, then it seems it's time to track down any inquest/coroner reports and stick your hand in your pocket if it exists.  That'd have all the details.

Such a nuisance when you don't have the confidence that it'd be money well spent though....I hate the vagueness of tracking down things that might cost money for no result.
