John Johnston of Hoddam Parish
« on: Wednesday 17 June 15 20:49 BST (UK) »
Hello! I am struggling to find a birth for an ancestor: John Johnston, I believe from Ecclefechan or somewhere nearby, born c. 1785.  He married Janet Lesley (I don't have a marriage date for them) and moved to Hawick at some point.  The family are in Hawick in 1841, 1851 and 1861.  I can't find a death for him either.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

That's an interesting twist!  I'll have to look into it.  I know their first child was born in 1803 in Hoddam, and all the children were born either in Dumfriesshire or (post 1816) in Hawick.

You never know, though!

Thanks for your suggestion.

Yes that is them.  Unfortunately I haven't managed to find a death for either John or Janet. >:(

They must both have died between 1861-71 but I can't find anything that looks right on Scotland's People.

The suggestion about Arthuret, Cumberland was intriguing - it's not many miles away from Hoddam Parish, but why would they have crossed the border to get married?  The wrong way?!  English people were crossing to Scotland to get married!

Would they have been working in Cumberland before their marriage?  Was this common to work in England? I'm not very well informed.

Maybe someone has some ideas!

Have seen a few deaths for  a John Johnston but not in Roxburgh ? Not very sure about the marriage if this is your couple ? What makes you think he came from Ecclefechan ?

It says Ecclefechan on the '61 census; Middlebie on '51 (out of county for '41); I guess I just picked one to put on my tree - they're not very far apart anyway.

Of course I would prefer to find a birth or death reg to back that up.

There is one possible death I haven't looked at, it's 1864 in Hawick but the age is unrecorded - so far I haven't wanted to risk spending the $$ to check the original.!
