Geneva Switzerland birth records
« on: Thursday 18 June 15 17:06 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a Jean Emile Henri BARDE born Geneva 1842.
By  1866 he was in London and married and lived here for the rest of his life.
Any ideas please?

I would suggest 2 starting points:

1. FamilySearch     www.familysearch.org

2. Cyndi's List       www.cyndislist.com/switzerland
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

1. Check his marriage certificate. Father's name and occupation?
2. Get his naturalisation documents: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4136324

http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/schweiz-en.html is a good starting guide.

There are some online records at the Geneve archives:
https://ge.ch/arvaegconsult/ws/consaeg/public/fiche/AEGSearch
select "repetoires de etat civil" then look for
"Répertoire des naissances du canton de A-Copponex." (1841-1850) - an index of births.

It lists
6 August 1841, Geneve,
Jean August & Jean Emile Henri (twins, I guess), sons of Jean Charles Barde and Caroline Louise Susanne de Galletin.
also another son
4th September 1849, Vernier, Charles Marc Albert

going back to the 1831-1840 births, there are also to this couple, both born Geneve:
26 May 1834, Antoinette Francoise Helen
3 Oct 1836, Jean Edouard

there is also a reference to the parents' marriage in 1832.

If you then choose "registres de etat civil", you can see the originals.  Hopefully this works for his birth (top left):

Interesting to note that the two witnesses are his paternal and maternal grandfathers.

If you search for "Barde Jean Emile Henri" on books.google.com you can find a snippet which refers to students of the Académie de Genève. Multiple members of the family are listed.

These are very much like the French ones, which I'm used to reading. Get a French genealogical word list and they're pretty easy to read because they   Definitely go through and look at all the witnesses and other details - I have a French one where a marriage witness is mentioned as "fourth cousin of the groom".  ::)

There is at least one person researching this family on geneanet (didn't check them all, just picked the first one with Barde/Geneve, you may need an account to view this but it's free):
http://gw.geneanet.org/rossellat?lang=fr;iz=22498;p=charles+jean;n=barde

Also on the Société Genevoise de Généalogie site:
http://m.gen-gen.ch/BARDE-de+GALLATIN/Caroline+Louise+Suzanne/1473695

You will see that some records have Jean Emile Henri as "Henri"/"Henry" - the first two are baptismal names, Henri/Henry would have been his day-to-day name (and the one he seems to have used on UK censuses much of the time).

One last note - in French records it's not unusual to find women, even after marriage, recorded with maiden name, and you may find the same thing here - with husband's name appended, "femme Barde" for wife of and "veuve Barde" for widow of.

This appears to be the same family in the Dictionnaire Historique et Biographique de la Suisse:

Jean Emile Henri's brother Jean Edouard (1836-1904) was a pastor and theologian; another brother Jules Auguste (1841-1914) was an oculist who opened the first eye clinic in Geneva, and a third brother Charles (b. 1848) was an architect and public health campaigner.

Their father Jean Charles (1803-1878) was also a pastor.  He spent time in France and England, and was very much involved with youth work within the church.

Charles' father was François (1775-1848), also known with the surname Barde-Bordier.  He was a Conseiller d'Etat (responsible for cantonal government) from 1831-1841.

François' father was Jean (1737-1819).

There is a picture (attached) of Jean Charles.

Can someone help me with Geneva detailed birth record for Francois Bovay born October 27, 1847? His parents appear to be Jean Louis and Jeanne Francoise Noyer according to the birth register. I tried looking at the detailed record and the resolution is so low I can't make anything out. I would love to know Jean Louis and Jeanne's marriage date and parents names if possible.

Thanks,

Mike
