Yes, once you've purchased the marriage certificate, and know William's father's name, then we can try to find him in Scotland - best first ports of call for that are Familysearch, and Scotland's People.

Thank you. I have the marriage certificate (purchased it in 1983) and William's father was also William with profession of Shoemaker. On William's death certificate it notes his fathers Name as William Cook and maiden surname of mother as Redford. There is no entry for her christian name. The entry for where born and how long in NZ it has Inch, Scotland, 30 years. The 30 years is correct as he arrived on the ship Emma Colvin in June 1856. The marriage between William and Ann Price was witnessed by George Price and Sarah Palmer. Ann's mothers maiden name was Palmer (Elizabeth).

Good information Melcook. Have you searched for William in Scotland yet?

How old was William when he married and when he died? If I remember correctly he was 31 in the 1851 census, so born about 1820.

Also, when he married, did his certificate say his father was deceased?

Yes have had several attempts at finding the family in Scotland, with no luck yet. William was born in 1819 or 1820 and died aged 67 in 1886. The marriage certificate was silent on whether his father was alive, so the fact that it didn't say anything, I presume he was alive?
Cheers for your help, Mel

Sorry also meant to say he was recorded as age 34 on the marriage certificate.

There is this one:

Kirkmaiden is only a parish away from Inch. I actually downloaded the entry from Scotland's People and the only extra information on the original is a place name which I am unable to read - it seems like Port Mcsock?  :-\ Place name will obviously need clarification if you think this may be your William.

Have a look on Familysearch in case the couple moved to Inch after this William's birth - they may have had further children in Inch. It is possible that William lived in Inch from childhood, and thought he had been born there whereas he was not.

Another possibility is that this is not your William at all.  ;) ;D

Did your William have any children called Rachel by any chance?

I don't know if William born 1819 had any siblings. William b1819 m Ann Price had children William b1855 (who didn't die on the ship, I was thinking of another family), Annie, Sidney and George. All except Wm were born in NZ.
I'll check the link you've sent and thank you for that.
