William Cole Mitchelmore and wife Lucy/Louisa- St Helier, Jersey
« on: Friday 19 June 15 13:53 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,

My husbands ancestor William C Mitchelmore, an ex-Royal Marine/seaman b 1809 Thurlestone, Devon and his wife, appear on the 1871 census living at 8 Kensington Place, St Helier. William is by then a pensioner.   The surname has been variously spelt Mitchelmore/Michelmore/Muchamore.

As William and Lucy/Louisa don't appear anywhere else I suspect that they must have died on Jersey.

Would anyone be able to check if their deaths are registered in Jersey please or tell me anything else about them.

With many thanks in advance

Wollydoodle

Dear La Grande-Methe,

What an amazingly fast reply!
Thank you very much for this information and detail. Poor old Louisa. It is interesting that her maiden name is recorded by the funeral directors. Is this normal in Jersey?
If William is not mentioned maybe he did move back to England or even go on elsewhere after she died.
I am grateful to you for having gone to the trouble of searching for this for me and then posting it so quickly La Grand-Methe.  Thank you very much indeed.

With kindest regards,

Wolly

It is very much the norm in Jersey for women to be referred to by their maiden names (where known) in all legal and official documents. In many cases the women reverted to their maiden names when they were widowed. If William had died first she may have been known as Louisa Annear, the widow Mitchelmore.

I don't know whether William died in Jersey or not, I just didn't have time to look this morning. I'll be back on Tuesday so if it's not too busy I'll carry on searching - at least we know that he died after 1876.

Dear La Grand-Methe,

What a very sensible practice, to retain ones maiden name. So much more respectful not to mention useful to genealogists.
It is very kind of you to consider searching for William, you have already been so helpful.
Thank you again,

with kindest regards,

Wolly

There are a couple of William Mitchelmore deaths within the right time frame. I'll have to go and look at the death certificates to see if either of them is the right age - I'll let you know if I have any luck.

Dear Grande-methe,

Thank you very much for going to this trouble. I feel I should offer to do something for you in return.
Is there anything I could look up for you? I have an subscription to an genealogical website offering some international search options as well as UK/Irish sources which I would be happy to use to look for something for you.

With many thanks
Wolly

Dear Grande-methe,

Yes, that seems to be him. So he lasted a few more years after Louisa died.
I have this idea that they 'retired' to Jersey because it was an nicer climate and more a more pleasant life than they had in Plymouth. It's probably wishful nonsense but I like to think they had an enjoyable last few years.
Thank you very much Grande-methe, for finding this information for me. It is very kind of you to go the trouble and I am most grateful.

With many thanks again,

Wolly
