My ggrandfather, William Stuart was a Head Constable in the RIC.  His son, also William Stuart, was born in County Cork in 1873 and the only person of that name on the 1911 census who fits the dates is a prison officer at Dundalk prison.  Perhaps William junior joined the RIC then transferred to the prison service or enrolled straight into the prison service.  Does anyone know if there are any records of prison officers at Dundalk and whether such registers give details of family etc and where they are kept if not online.  Many thanks.

Wm Stuart was born in Carrigtwohill, Cork, on 22 January 1873.  I have his birth certificate. As the name is so common I cannot positively identify a marriage for him.  According to his brother George's attestation papers, William was living in Kilkenny in 1900 but he does not appear on the 1901 census there.  I have also tried 'W S' /religion/county of origin and all permutations in case he was in the RIC as was his father.   Again there are a couple of possibilities but nothing that I can positively say is the right one.  The 1911 census entry seemed a line of enquiry to follow.  Regards

If you get a copy of William’s RIC service record it should tell you where and when he married. Note he had to have been in the RIC for 7 years before he was allowed to marry. He also had to be 19 to join the RIC (18 if his father had been in the RIC too). The service record should also tell you when he was discharged, and that may help decide whether he subsequently became a prison officer.

Thanks for that Elwyn.  Trouble is I live in Somerset in the UK and the records are in Kew or Dublin! I have a contact near Dublin who has kindly offered to look this up for me.  I had hoped that the record would be on igp.web (as is the one for Wm Stuart senior) but they do not have records for that year in the Cork section.  Regards

The PSNI museum also has a copy of the RIC service records and will do look ups for a fee:

Thanks Elwyn.  I will remember that if my contact doesn't come up trumps.  I will have to save up my pennies....Regards Deirdre
