Missing Straughans of Northumberland, can anyone help?
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 10:40 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to extend my research on one side of the family and I'm drawing a complete blank.

I'm trying to find the Straughans who are living in Hartlaw in 1891, Ulgham in 1901 and Choppington in 1911.

I'm trying to find Thomas Straughan born 1869 in Belford and Ellen Straughan born 1841 in Belford.  I can't find them prior to 1891.  Despite cross referencing other family members and looking closer to Belford on the earlier census as it seems the family didn't move further afield until the later census'.

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

It looks to me as though the family name was STRAFFEN (or variant)?

Straughan would be pronounced Straffen.

Thanks Jen and Maureen.

Jen that certainly looks like them in 1881, how did you find that entry?  I can't pick that one up on Findmypast or Familysearch.

Maureen how do you bring up the variants?  I clicked variants on Findmypast but still didn't get any different spellings.

It's interesting reading the way it was pronounced I'm trying to think back to the early 1980's and hearing my grandmother pronounce the name (she was a Straughan) it would have been very different to the way my grandfather pronounced it, he was from Amble initially and had a very strong, guttural Northumberland accent.

You will find them on FindMyPast indexed as Straughtan in the 1881

I found them there by searching Thomas Str* born 1869.

You could also find them using the census reference number I gave :)

There have been some other threads on RC about Straughans and some of them have been found under the name Straffen because the name has been written the way it was pronounced  ;D
