Adelaide Lawton - Lost in census
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 15:41 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Adelaide Lawton (nee Pearce) is missing in the 1901 census despite being still alive.

I know that she was born in around 1849 in Birmingham. Her father's name was George but I don't know her mother's name as I've never found Adelaide in the 1851 or 1861 census.

I know her father's name because of her marriage Banns record. She married Isaac Lawton in 1865. They appear in the 1871 and 1881 census together, living in Birmingham.

In 1891 she appears on her own as head of the family but is still listed as married. Her husband Isaac was possibly still alive as I found a likely death record for him in 1913.

I found a death record for Adelaide in 1902 so she would have appeared in the 1901 census. I'd like to find her in this census but so far have had no luck.

I found a Birmingham rate book record for an Adelaide Lawton that is dated 1901. She is living at 86 Steward Street, Birmingham (Rotton Park district). It states that she is renting a retail shop and house.

If anyone knows how to search this street in the 1901 census and can find Adelaide I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm not sure why she doesn't appear with her husband Isaac Lawton after 1891. Perhaps they separated? I can't find him after 1881 but believe he died in 1913!

If it helps, I now that Adelaide had the following children - all taken from the census records
Joseph Lawton - 1865
Henry Lawton - 1867
Emma Lawton - 1871
Henry Lawton - 1876
Mary - 1876
William - 1888
Warwickshire, Birmingham, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Bridgnorth.

Thanks JenB!

Why on earth would she call herself Sarah? Interestingly, her husband Isaac is called William in one census! :)

The children living with her match the children in previous census records and they are the correct ages. I wonder if she is listed as Sarah as a child with her parents? I've never found her in the 1851 or 61 census.

The marriage entry states her father as Henry not George.
Her age is given as 22 so born C.1843 not 49.
Her mother's name is Emma.
I notice 2 of her children are called Henry & Emma.
This appears to be her in 1861:
RG 9; Piece: 2131; Folio: 35; Page: 13
There's a marriage in West Bromwich in 1838 for a Henry Pearce & on the same page is Emma Sylvester.
In 1861 there's a boarder living with them called Betsy Silvester.
Can see just 1 possible birth:
Emma Silvester b. 20/9/1822; parents William & Ann; add. Lench St. occ: brass founder.
There seems to be 11 children in all.
Ann is widowed in 1841. William died in 1836 aged 37.

Thanks Jim! Yes you're right, her father was Henry. That was a typo on my part!
