844 Service record: Service number 5556 Thomas McGIVERN, Aged 20
« on: Sunday 21 June 15 16:03 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather was in the R.I.C. and I recently found part of his service history...1844 Service record: Service number:5556    McGIVERN, Thos    Aged:  20  Appointed: 10-Aug  Born:  Armagh  Catholic      Marriage date 28/7/1853 & 17/10/69  Wife native county Cavan & Monaghan Trade: Farmer Stationed: Reserve, Cavan...didn't know he had a previous marriage!!
His second marriage was to Mary Maguire/McGuire in 1869 at Manorhamilton. Now I have to find his first marriage  dated 28/7/1853 to an unknown woman from Monaghan somewhere in Ireland .One clue due to my his job , he attended many court sessions in Castleblaney.

Looking at Thomas McGIVERN/Mary MAGUIRE/McGUIRE as parents
there are baptisms showing Cloonclare as their address in the early 1870s

There is a baptism on Sep 13 1854 of a John MAGIVEREN in Cloonclare RC Church, Co. Leitrim
His parents were Thomas MAGIVEREN and Mary FARRELLY

This may be a lead!

Thanks Myluck,
That is very interesting information. What resource did you find that in ? Thomas McGivern married Mary McGuire in 1869 at Manorhamilton Leitrim (maybe Glenfarne ) which covers the same area as Cloonclare. I've always thought they had ten children. I have baptisms for eight of them The first being James McGivern dob.31 March 1873. The two missing are John Robert McGivern and Anna McGivern. If a search finds Anna McGivern with parents Thomas MAGIVEREN & Mary FARRELLY......

I was searching in www.rootsireland.ie

Thomas MacGIVERN widower of Clastleblaney (f) Robert m. Mary MAGUIRE of Annagh (f) Patrick
October 17 1869 in Glenfarne RC Church

There are seven children listed to this combination of parents and one to
Robert McGivrn and Mary Maguire which could be a mistranscription
Bap. Feb 18 1871 John in Cloonclare RC Church

bap Sep 13 1854 John MAGIVEREN in Cloonclare RC Church
to Thomas MAGIVEREN and Mary FARRELLY

Either or both of these could be the John you are trying to locate - seeing the actual records would help

I cannot locate a birth or baptism of Anna
There is however a marriage on Feb 01 1883 in Cloonclare of
Anna MacGIVERN to James McGovern
her father is given as Thomas Land Agent which is how Thomas is described on the later baptisms
She is shown as over 21 which implies she was born before 1862

There is also a marriage on Aug 18 1875 in Ballymena RC Co. Antrim (which is a long shot!)
of Alise McGIVERN Teacher aged 20 to Pierce LANGAN
Her father is shown as Thomas McGIVERN Constable
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley

Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller

Just did a recount to check the facts...nine children not ten with seven baptisms found...

"Thomas MacGIVERN widower of Clastleblaney (f) Robert m. Mary MAGUIRE of Annagh (f) Patrick
October 17 1869 in Glenfarne RC Church" is spot on with the facts I have, places, fathers names etc.
I'll search for his first wife * MacGIVERN in deaths in Castleblaney prior to 1869

"Robert McGivrn and Mary Maguire which could be a mistranscription
Bap. Feb 18 1871 John in Cloonclare RC Church"
Is a definate maybe :) The John I seek is John Robert McGivern.

"bap Sep 13 1854 John MAGIVEREN in Cloonclare RC Church
to Thomas MAGIVEREN and Mary FARRELLY" is under investigation.

Just thinking out loud...Thomas McGivern was born in Armagh 1824 but described above as a widower from Castleblaney where he attended many court cases. If Mary FARRELLY was his first wife from Castleblaney what are they doing baptising a son in Cloonclare RC Church. More late nights ahead. Thanks again MyLuck.

For the 1869 marriage Castleblaney could have been his address rather than his place of birth

Hope the other info leads to something :)
