This may indicate poor Lizzie was maybe a little simple as they used to say

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH18900904.2.48&srpos=2&e=-------10--1-byDA---2eliza+fitzpatrick--

"Eliza Fitzpatrick, charged with assaulting Mary Canty, by striking her on the head with a whitewash brush, was fined 10s, and costs £1 -16-6d , or 14 days. Considerable sympathy was felt for the accused, as she was the first struck, and is not altogether of sound mind, and the amount of fine and costs was subscribed."

It's unfair I believe to suggest that "Lizzie was maybe a little simple".   ::)

Perhaps this is why she had so many children that all seem to be born illegitimate.  I did read in one article that it wouldn't be too hard to prove parentage.  Wonder what that means?  And I wonder who her family are.  Mother and or father.  Don't you all wish that there was a time machine to transport us back in time?

Hi again Paula

re:  John George FITZPATRICK - WW1 file

When he attested for war service in July? 1817, this man gave his birthdate as "11/5/97" (11 May 1897).

He does though seem to be the child whose birth was registered 1894 as John Goodwin FITZPATRICK (Mother: Elizabeth -- Father:  N/R).    When birthdate is deduced from the online NZ BDM listing, it gives a date of ... 16 April 1894???
[Note:   It's not terribly unusual to find on Army files, soldiers giving incorrect info in respect of birthdates. ]

The attestation form [Image 19 of file] gives his mother's name as "Lizzie FITZPATRICK" born Ireland.   Mother:  Time in NZ - ??  (very difficult to decipher what this says) ?

Police Court - Ngaruawahia

FITZPATRICK v. GOODWIN
... defendant (GOODWIN) failing to support a child.

[Note:   Couldn't see anything further re: this case.  The "Waikato Times" was only published thrice-weekly at that time ... and the case was to be heard on following day (28th ?)   Doesn't seem to have been followed up in the next edition 29th Sept ??]

You seem to be onto something here.  Would make sense why the child John had Goodwin has his middle name.
