Place of birth for James Herbertson as 1851 Census
« on: Monday 22 June 15 04:23 BST (UK) »
Howdy from Australia, Ancestry has James's birth place as Dregoch, Dumfriesshire in about 1782.

I have downloaded the actual image from Scotlands People and I strongly suspect there has been a transcription error.

Can anyone assist with what the place name might be. James died in 1858 and on his death certificate his father is shown as John Herbertson (farmer) and mother Elizabeth Linton. Both deceased at that time.

Thanks

Rickey Herbertson

Don't see a birth for James but there are other children of this couple listed on Familysearch with place of birth Dalton, Dumfriesshire. This looks like it might be a fit.

Ignore that - it looks nothing like Dalton!

Duly ignored Isobel!  ;)

The first word is Dumfrieshire so I reckon the place name also starts with a 'D' but that is about as far as I can get. Maybe a 'g' in the middle?

Wondered if it might be an attempt to capture "Darngarroch"?

I like it - providing it is a place! I can see the 'ch' at the end.

Thanks for your help - will do some more research.

There are 3 children born at Dalton, "placename as previously mentioned" in 1773, 1777 and 1779.

I have Jannet, Rachel and Thomas but cannot find a birth record for James. When you say 'placename as previously mentioned' you mean 'Dalton'?

It's just that James' census record doesn't look anything like Dalton.
