William Jones 1873-1929
« on: Tuesday 23 June 15 14:00 BST (UK) »
I'm seeking help regarding William Jones 1873-1929 who was my grandfather.

I have the following information:-
Born 1873 Llandwrog
Married Margaret Ann Jones 1907 in Pontypridd, two children Annie Maria 1903, Frederick William 1911.
Death  Dec 1929 Pontypridd.

This all taken from 1911 census, which was filled in by Margaret as he was illiterate, so date and place of birth might not be accurate. Their marriage cert gives his father's name as William and deceased.

I might have found him in 1901 in Cardiff as a lodger, but birth location only given as Caernarvonshire. We have no knowledge of any siblings. I have not obtained his birth certificate as the uncertainty could mean several copies.

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Emlyn,

Welcome (a croeso) to RootsChat with your first post. I'm sorry to see that nobody has replied to you yet.

I understand your post, but I'm not too sure what information you are asking for (I am feeling particularly thick today though!). What piece in the puzzle would help you the most?

Emlyn,

I think I've found him on the 1901 census in Llandwrog (aged 28, which would mean he was born in 1873):

Emlyn

And could this be his christening record perhaps in Clynnog (just over three miles from Llandwrog as the crow flies)

Trystan,
Thank you so much for your reply. I doubt the 1901 census as I've looked at the actual census form and he is married to a Jane Anne. Although he did not marry Margaret  til 1907
my Aunt was born in 1902 but he is not on her birth cert. The baptism is interesting as it gives a mothers name so will now see where that leads me. I will post back here when I find anything.

Given the children's names is it likely that Margaret Ann's parents were Frederick and Ann(ie),perhaps as in

RG12/4420/122/32

leaving William's parents as William and Mary(?),perhaps as in

RG11/5562/5/3  Swan/Clynnog
(I haven't followed this family through to see if the father is deceased by the time of the marriage)

Regards
Roger

Hi,

I have the Gwynedd FHS Memorial Inscriptions Booklet for St Thomas, Llandwrog and have been looking through it to try and help. There is a William and Mary Jones buried in grave A066 but William did not died until 1910. However -

I don't know if this is the family but .....

There is a burial of William Jones (grave D057) who died 5/1/1884 age 46 and his wife Ann who died 15/10/1909 age 72 - lived at Ty Eiddaw, Llandwrog.

The 1881 census has the family as -

William  43
Ann(e) 43
Hugh 14
William 11 (Not quite 1873 but could this be him?)
Ellin 7
Margaret 4
Richard 2

and by 1891 an additional son John W age 9 (Ann(e) is shown as Anna on this census)

Also in grave D045 are his two sons Hugh died 3/5/1886 age 18 and Richard W died 21/03/1908 age 29.

Possibly William's parents were buried elsewhere however for this church I can't see any other father "William" with a death prior to son William's marriage in 1907 which might fit but perhaps you would like to look further into this one?

If I can help any further please let me know.

Alan
