Don't panic! - take it one step at a time.

The 1913 birth registration Rosie found looks good, so unless anyone can find a baptism which would name the parents, the next step would be to buy a copy of his birth certificate. 

I think Gladys is a red herring and not related.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Oh bless you  ;D yes I like what Rosie did there, helped alot. Where would I start with finding baptism?

I've checked the usual sites - Ancestry, Freereg, FindMyPast, Familysearch but nothing comes up. Can't find an OPC site for Nottinghamshire. Very few 20th century baptisms are on line

Unless anyone else finds a different site, the only way is to order the cert from the GRO

Although this costs £9.25 you will get parents names, address and father's occupation, so you can link back to census records. 
If his father does turn out to be Ernest, it looks as he is straightforward to trace back a couple more generations.
