Henry Hammann - emigration to New Zealand
« on: Wednesday 24 June 15 04:26 BST (UK) »
According to his obituary my gr.grandfather Henry Hammann/Hamman (later Anglicised to Hammond) emigrated to New Zealand from Germany before coming to Australia.
His Australian naturalization record states he was born in Holstein, Germany in 1841 (approx.)
I have been unable to find any birth record for him.  On his marriage cert. in 1883 in Aust.
his parents were Claus Hammond, a navy captain and Louisa Reusch.

He spent some time in the New Zealand gold fields before coming to Victoria.  Death cert.
in 1914 states that he spent 7 years in Victoria and 33 years in Queensland.  This would
place his arrival in Australia in the early 1870's.

Would any N.Z.  Rootschatters be able to help me with his arrival in New Zealand and
his subsequent emigration to Victoria please?

Thankyou,

Regards,
Jen.

Thankyou Janette for your replies, the immigration record is a good find ;D
I'm not familiar with N.Z. geography, would Canterbury be a logical place to arrive if you
were travelling to the gold fields presumably around Otago and surrounds?

Jen.

There is a later map of the goldfields here that may help

Not usual to travel to Otago Goldfields overland from Canterbury / Lyttleton Port

Would have travelled by ship to Port Chalmers / Dunedin

Did he have a brother John ?

Papers Past - Otago Daily Times  records this birth
On the 4th January 1864, Mrs John Hammann, Moray-place, of a son.
Moray Place is at the centre of Dunedin a block outside and around the central Octagon

Many references to this family in Papers past and Otago Nominal Index - the double m disappears
DIED.
On the 3rd August 1867, at Moray Place, Marie Minna, the beloved daughter of John and Annie Hamann, aged one year and eleven months.

John Was a shipping agent and taught German Language

Son Adolph Philip William HAMANN was a goldfields lecturer NZ Mines Dept and then Bendigo School of Mines, later assayer & mining surveyor at Menzies W.A.,  an enthusiastic volunteer officer, died in Menzies, Western Australia, 1900  (Otago Boys High School Centennial Register)

Hi Signal,   Thankyou for all the information you provided.  I have no information on
my gr.grandfather before 1880 except what is written in his obituary.
Apart from his parents names I have no info. on his early life in Germany.
When I was a child my grandfather mentioned that his father had a brother
who emigrated to U.S.A but I don't know his name.

The first child of Henry Hamman was born in 1872 in Victoria, Australia.  I hoped
to find a record of his journey from New Zealand to Australia, but I am unsure
where to look as I am unfamiliar with N.Z. family history resources.

Kind regards,
Jen.
