Fogarty / Neely in Co Tipperary 1850+
« on: Friday 26 June 15 18:57 BST (UK) »
I have a FOGARTY family in Tipperary I'd like to find out more about.  The wife/mother is a sister to our Neely ancestor.

Margaret NEELY was the daughter of Richard NEELY and Johanna DONOVAN.
Born: 17 Sep 1843 Holycross-Ballycahill RC records, Godparents:   Thomas Donovan and Eliza Cormack

Margaret married Michael FOGARTY, about 1870 [no record found], and they had the following children per FamilySearch:
Richard b.3 Feb 1872 in HolyCross
Mary Anne b.26 June 1874 in HolyCross
Bridget b. 13 Jan 1878 in Farney Bridge
Patrick b.21 Mar 1880 in Farney Bridge

In 1887, Michael Fogarty of Farney Bridge, signs the death record for his mother-in-law, Johanna Donovan Neely.  Was Margaret deceased or were men expected to sign the death records?

I'd like to find out more about this family.  Who were Michael's parents?  Did the family remain in Ireland or did they immigrate?   Many of Margaret's siblings immigrated to the NYC area between 1865-1885.

I've searched at Ancestry.com, but haven't really found anything that matches up.

Thanks.
NKN

Neely, Dalton, Gallagher, Goravin, Walsh, Coughlin, Austin, Reid, Shanahan, Hoag, McGarrell, Hannigan, O'Brien, Donovan, and Muldowny.

You have an early parish record, did you visit the NLI or find this online?
If you haven't looked at them already the images of RC parish records will come online from July 8th, free.
You can see what survives for Diocese of Cashel and Emily here, Ballycahill and Holycross are on page 34

My original info, the parents and kids, came from FamilySearch.   Just yesterday, I joined the RootsIreland site for one month and found another child (Esther), church baptisms at HolyCross and the marriage of the parents which occurred at HolyCross.
Neely, Dalton, Gallagher, Goravin, Walsh, Coughlin, Austin, Reid, Shanahan, Hoag, McGarrell, Hannigan, O'Brien, Donovan, and Muldowny.

Thanks, AnnClaire.   I'll check out the links.

And, yes, I do have the Neely family baptismal info at Holycross.  I ordered it from the No.Tipperary Historical Group a long time ago.  Their son, Thomas, was very proud of where he came from (Thurles) and it was referenced in his death cert and obit. So, I paid their fee and was very pleased with what I received.

AnnClare, those links were really good ones !     The footnote on Patrick's Marriage record to Margaret Candy indicated that his father was deceased.  So I checked back at RootsIreland and found it.  Tipperary, 1904, a gardener and a son, Richard, was the informant.  Works for me.

Now to do some more digging.

Okay.   My NEELY research in the HolyCross area of Tipperary has expanded to a few more families.
Neely - Fogarty - McKeogh - Sweeney - Gavan - Ryan

Anyone familiar with these names/people in the HolyCross/Thurles area of Tipperary?
I have either the census reports or the birth records.
Would be interested in any background info on the families.

Margaret NEELY married Michael FOGARTY, 1870.
Five children:  Richard, Mary Anne, Bridget, Esther, Patrick and Margaret.

(1) Daughter, Mary Anne FOGARTY married John McKEOGH, 1902.
They had 3 children:  Josephine, William and Michael.
Josephine McKEOGH married a Matthew SWEENEY, son of Matthew SWEENEY and Honora RYAN.
Found a couple Ancestry trees with Josephine and Michael.

(2) Daughter, Bridget FOGARTY, married a Mr. GAVAN.
She appears with her mother and siblings, as a widow, in the 1911 census.
That's all I have on her marriage.

Thanks.

Having second thoughts as Esther was 25 in 1901 Census.
