George Arthur Butler Birth Date Anomoly

Oh dear -- I am back with another query I'm afraid.

I have obtained the marriage record of a George Arthur Butler who married Mary McLaren Palmer in 1917.
George Arthur is shown as 38 years old - hence an approximate birth year of 1879. (His bride was 25)

His father is shown as Edward Fielder Butler and his mother was Annie Matilda Wallace.

George Arthur Butler died in 1935 --- aged 57. (Hence approx birth year of 1878.

The only birth record I can see is one for a George Butler (no middle name of Arthur) - parents Edward Fielder Butler and Annie Matilda. Date 1867. (11 or 12 years before his age at marriage and death).

Is anyone able to see the birth of a George Arthur Butler in or around 1878 please - with parents of Edward Fielder Butler and Annie Matilda Wallace?

Or -- has the middle name of 'Arthur' suddenly been added later -- and is George understating his age from his marriage onwards?
Or -- am I missing something? - in which case I will feel like a right idiot!

Two suggestions:

The first George died and a second child was named after him, but that doesn't explain why there are no birth records. I presume there isn't a record for an Arthur Butler born 1878 and that it was the name George that was added later? Given the unusual combination of names that fit with the marriage, I would guess that is the right family.

Or, and perhaps more likely, he knocked a few years off his age as he was so much older than his wife.

Hi Groom,

I did look for a death of a young George Butler, between 1867 and 1878 -- but I couldn't see one.

I agree he may have understated his age at marriage because of the younger wife -- but, if he did -- then he managed to maintain that deception throughout his life. That wouldn't have been easy.

It's a bit of a mystery at the moment.

Could his father have had another wife or the mother name entered incorrectly  in the Nzbdm  and the second name been added later?

Looking at the birth index on Ancestry, 4th quarter with Registration Place being Malvern.

There is no Elizabeth showing with the Butlers in Otautau Cemetery.

Going by a school record for the birth of the 1878 Butler born in Malvern is not George Arthur.

Electoral Rolls show that Edward Fielder Butler was in the Riverton area, while the Edward Butler was in the Heathcote area.
