Manchester Sheffield & Lincoln Railway 1851 - 1863
« on: Sunday 28 June 15 12:43 BST (UK) »
From Employment Records and census information I have ascertained that my great great grandfather was employed by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincoln Railway between 1851 and 1863

1851 - census has him living (with his family) at Deansgate, Altrincham, Manchester - Rly Stn. Agent
1856 - Empt record has him now living at Lincoln - clerk in Charge
1860 - Empt record has him now at Sheffield - Coal Traffic Superintendant
1861 - census still living at Sheffield (with family) & now Manager of Manchester Sheffield Railway
1862 - Empt. Record - Sheffield Station Accountant's Personal Staff List
1863 - Resigned

I'm really interested in the fact that the family was accommodated at the Railway Station, it was a big family, and the 1851 census show they had a servant as well!  Lucky them  :)

But I'm more interested in trying to locate old photos of those 3 stations at or around the time of the time frame he was working there?

I have seen a couple on the net, in later years, and with modifications. But keen to find the early ones.

I wonder does anyone have any knowledge where I might find early photos of these three stations?

Done loads of searches, but might need a Railways enthusiasts help with this one.

Thanks if you can help!

Jeanne

The Sheffield station was probably Sheffield Victoria?
There were a total of 5 stations in Sheffield - Central Station was the last, and not built until 1870.

Some info re the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway here:

Manchester Central could be where he was employed in Manchester?
The MSLR eventually became known as The Great Central Railway.

You could try this specialist rail site:

http://www.railforums.co.uk

They have a photography board and a nostalgia board. Perhaps an appeal on either of those might get you some photos?

You could also try the 'Disused Stations' web-site; there are 2 Shefffield stations featured with photographs.

There is a newspaper called Lincolnshire Bygones that is sure to have what you need . If you google that name you should find something maybe in back issues.        Sue
