Minster, Kent. John Paterson and father Robert Paterson farmers
« on: Monday 29 June 15 09:00 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help please.  I wonder where John Paterson went from this address in the 1901 census.  He showed up here in New Zealand in 1908 or earlier.
They are of Scottish descent.
they appear to have been at Shephall, Hertfordshire, England. in the 1891 census when John was aged 17.

(that is if I have the correct Paterson!)

Robert and Ann (Wallace) Paterson
and children;
Jane Paterson 11 Apr 1865
Robert Paterson 27 Jan 1867 (not shown on census in England)
Samuel Paterson c1869 (turned up at Newbury Manor Silsoe)
James Paterson c 1872
John Paterson DOB 03 Oct 1874 (our family link as John aka Jack Paterson moved to New Zealand)
Lillias Paterson c1880 . Died Dec 1943 Luxton, Bedfordshire

Could this one of the properties they lived in when farming.  It seems they always sent a photo over here to John when they moved.

Paterson, Wallace, Hamilton. (Scotland- England)
Richards,Richardson,  Schrieber, McIntyre (English/ Switzerland-Germany/ Scotland - Barra)
Bailey,Parry, Harpur, Neilson, Johansen, (English/Welsh/Danish/ Norwegian)

For anyone looking  :)
1901 has Robert living at Thorne Farm, Minster with his children
Jane 36
James 29
John 26
Lillias 22 all born Scotland.

Have you tried looking at Google earth or similar to see if a house like that is in Minster.  :-\  It appears on census next to Thorne House and close to Sevenscore Farm in 1901.

Hi
Robert Pater son was the farm bailiff of Thorne Farm. He and his family lived in the farm house now known as Chapel House, Thorne.  The picture above is not this house. Can send pic.

Hi Graham,

thank you so much.  I'm wondering which Robert Paterson was at Thorne Farm and Im sure in time this will be clearer.

Thanks about info on building and We would love to see a picture if there is one.

As for the above building - I now have reason to believe it is the farm house of Oak Farm St Albans England, which has now been rendered and painted?  I have yet to confirm that.  For us it helps to confirm that the family did live and farm there. These photos were sent over to NZ to John (aka Jack) their brother/uncle, presumably to tell their story of where they were farming.

Thanks for your time!

This picture of Oak Farm does not look the same as the picture you have

Thanks Rosie99,
however there is a building at the road front.  Which may have been a farm house?  It does look similar.  What do you think?

The chimneys are in a different place.   :-\

This is a pretty standard style for a double fronted detached house in the UK.  I am not too good at dating but it looks similar to some I know of that were built around the 1930's.  I once lived in a similar house to your second picture and there was a definite change in brick pattern which gave a raised line around the house above which was rendered & painted.  It looks as though this could be the case in the second picture.

Thanks Rosie.

I guess that eliminates that idea then. Cheers.
