Victoria: Brothers Abraham and Edward FOX

Hello,

The UK has a heatwave, 30C today 35C tomorrow.......so hopefully Victoria can produce a brainwave in retrieving some details for the following

Abraham and Edward FOX, were born 1829 and 1830 respectively in St.Mary Magdelene, Taunton, Somerset, and together they stole 2 baskets, were sentenced on 01/07/1845, both went to Millbank and Parkhurst Prisons initially, were then transported for 7 years aboard the "Marion" reaching Williamstown, Port Phillip, as Exiles on 25/01/1848 and went ashore at their own requests, that is, presumably they refused offers of work that may have been made.  And there the story so far ends...........

Their Father, William, born 1796, was a Bookseller in Taunton and they had two brothers William (born 1834), Jonathan (1836) and a sister Eliza (1826).   Unfortunately, I have not been able to discover details of the mother.

TROVE has not been helpful nor the other limited indexes I can access.   Any possibilities please.

Can't see much in Australia but only had a quick look at this stage.

You say you haven't found anything about their mother.  Could this be the baptism for Edward (from FreeReg)

There is also this baptism for what appears to be the same parents although the father's occupation has changed, and the date is a little earlier than 1829.

Looks as though this is the family as Free Reg also has these baptisms:

William Hitchings FOX, bap 17 June 1832 - other details the same except that father's occupation now shows as bookseller.

This one is VERY speculative, but would fit with William having no wife listed in 1841 (FreeReg)

The only FOX death registered in Taunton in the July/Aug/Sep qr 1840 is a Mary FOX - perhaps that was her legal name 

Is this William in the 1851 census?
living as a lodger in Jacob St, Bristol
William FOX, Unmarried, 60, bookseller
As he was lodging it's possible that the person filling in the census may not have exact details.

TROVE has this death notice which fits the Fox/Herbert marriage found by Merlin - at least the chap is the correct age!

Edward, the beloved husband of Martha Fox, aged 68 years, late of

I cannot see this man on my resource for the Victorian BMD death index - my resource is not always 100% reliable. I think if you search the government website Victorian BMDs you may find an entry for him.  Someone else may be able to access the index and find the reg number.  Australian death certificates contain very good information, as do Marriage certificates, although perhaps not this one as Merlin says it's a church register copy which are sometimes lacking in detail..  You can download an image for $AU21.

I cannot see a will for him either but it looks as though he may have left a trust and I'm not sure if that means his will would be probated or the estate pass direct to his widow.

Martha died in 1898 and there is a will for her - leaves all to her niece Ellen SIMPSON.  There are death notice in TROVE for her.

Eric, perhaps you might like to acquaint yourself with Tony's research he is doing for his PhD on the PARKHURST BOYS. Then you will understand the difference with these convicts
