Cormack in Maryborough, Queens C.
« on: Tuesday 30 June 15 21:56 BST (UK) »
Have a Patrick Michael Cormack b. 1852 Templemore, Tipperary. Enlisted in the army August 1870. Gave his trade as a baker.  [previous posting helped me establish army service]

Married in 1876 Aldershot England - Rachael Harriett Pocock. [Gave his religion as R.C on enlistment, married in Weslyan ch.]

On discharge from the army he gave his intended address  as 19 Mary Street, Maryborough, Queens County.

Cannot find Maryborough on Ireland census - plenty of Patrick Cormac/McCormack, but none listing a wife Rachel, Rachel Harriett or Harriett.  I don't know if they had children or even if they stayed in Ireland.

Have looked at passenger lists, + Austaralia, U.S and Canada and England census returns for 1890's and 1901, again lots of P.Cormacs but no wife of the right name.

Would be grateful for any info.

I can't find a Mary Street and can only think he meant Main St. Maryborough. In any case they don't appear to be there in1901.
As it wasn't his home county I would be inclined to think he had got a job lined up or was giving the address of someone he knew so it's possible he never lived there or if he did it wasn't for very long.

There was a bakery and a couple of Hotels on Main Street in 1901.

Hi There

There is no Mary Street in Portlaoise that I am aware of but is possible Main Street as per Sinann's suggestion.

Cormack is not a local name but there were a few McCormacks On GV !

http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/laois/borris.htm

This is 19 Main Street, Portlaoise.

https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.034053,-7.296708,3a,75y,359.9h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sNe5RLjtmCjtq3JEGkL0B6Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

It's just a stone's throw from the train station.

Anyway, no. 19 is beside Market Square in Portlaoise and a Loughlin McCormack is there on the GV.

No. 29 Main Street is O'Loughlin's Hotel and used to be listed as The Barracks.

You might find the attached useful.

http://www.portlaoisepictures.com/123grayrestaurant.htm

Anyway, the other end of Main Street Portlaoise bring you to Portlaoise Jail which was also used as a military base at one point.

Portlaoise was the middle / heart of Ireland at the time and was used as a central base and a top of travelling to other parts of Ireland.

It may have been simply that he was stopping there on his way back to Tipperary, one county away !

Tara

Thank you Sinann and Tara.

You say Cormack is not a local name (Portlaoise), presumably  it would be more local across the county line in Tipperary?

Also would maybe adding/dropping Mc in front of a name, be common practice, or of benefit socially or in religious terms?

Is there a GV for all Counties, countywide, or do you have to be specific to a town, and would a wifes name be listed on there?.

Sorry to be a pain

GV is property survey http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
Carried out for Tax purposes.
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/history-heritage/irish-genealogy/what-is-griffiths-valuati/
Only the owner/occupier is listed, the head of the household as such, so in general terms a wife would only be listed if she was a widow.

The prefix on surname gets a bit complicated but generally were used again from the 1890s

Hi There Corndolly

My point was that Portlaoise had strong military links and was a mid point on most peoples travels and I"d imagine it was on either of these points that he gave the address.

The MC Cormack GV reference was just as an outside possible scenario.
