Help finding John Donald Robertson in Quebec
« on: Thursday 02 July 15 10:25 BST (UK) »
Please can someone help trace John Donald Robertson in (probably) Quebec, Canada?  Apart from the Ocean Arrivals form (attached), WW1 record and a family bible giving death date, I have no information.

b. 1896 Jarrow, Durham, England.
d. 13/01/1955 Canada.

Thank you for looking,

finta

Hi,

There is a Canada Form 30A  - 1924 -- John Donald Robertson - born 1897 and aged 27 years - Jarrow Durham - on the Cameronia (was transcribed as born Toronto Scotland !!)  Married. Present Occupation Theatrical Manager - Intended Occupation Farming. Destined to a Mr Robb, Canadian National ???? (railway ??) Nearest relative from whence came Miss E A Robertson., Westfield House, Jarrow On Tyne.

Unfortunately there are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.  The latest available Canadian Census is 1921   As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago (up to about 1929/30 at present) and deaths 70 years ago. Sometimes by using newspaper announcements, cemetery records, obituaries, telephone directories, http://www.canada411.ca/ etc it is possible to trace the families forward.

Have you got the name of John's wife or any children they may have had in 1924 ?

Thanks for your reply, Sandra.
I'd found the Ocean Arrivals Form 30A and tried to attach it, but it was removed from my post.  It's definitely him as all the info fits.  Unfortunately, even though he stated he was married on the form there is no record in the family bible about a wife and I haven't found a convincing marriage registration for him in the UK.

Thanks very much for the information on BMDs etc. I will have a look at the site you suggested! There are a few possibilities on Canadian Electoral rolls, so who knows?

Thanks again,

finta
