Hi Chempat,

The information about the serviceman comes from a relative who remembers visiting her with his mother (Frances's niece) as a small child which would probably have been mid to late 40s.

She does feature on a couple of online trees but they do not have any additional information unfortunately.

It looks as if I may need to cast my net a bit wider or wait for 2022 and hope the 1921 census can help  ;)

Thank you for your suggestions.

Finally had a breakthrough  ;D

She married for the first time at the grand old age of 70 in 1954 - finally found the clue from the register of electors for Green Hammerton 1957/58.

Husband was Thomas Alexander CAREY, widower, also 70.

So far so good however although I can find a probable death for Thomas in 1958 (Claro district) - there does not seem to be a suitable entry for Frances CAREY.

One step forward two steps back!

Death certificate for Thomas, to see if Frances is informant, or has pre-deceased him?

Well it appears she married again in 1960 but sadly died a few months later.  She is buried in York cemetery.

Phew - got there in the end  :)

Pleased that you found her - did you manage to also find her in 1939 under any of her surnames?

Hi Chempat,

Well therein lies a bit of a tale,  I found who I believe was Thomas Carey living with Ellen Carey, Ellen being the name of his first wife but this Ellen was not his first wife as she was living elsewhere.  The Ellen who was living with Thomas in 1939 gave her dob as 28 December 1884!  So was this really Frances?  Guess I'll never know for sure but it is interesting that they did not marry until 1954 - one year after Thomas's first wife Ellen died.

No wonder the information that had passed down the family about her was a bit sketchy   :o ;D
