The streets you're interested in aren't online.

It would appear that Sheffield's registers are at the Sheffield Archives

https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries/archives-and-local-studies/collections/electoral-registers.html

I checked the British Library's holdings but they have nothing until after WW2.

I have managed to take a look for myself and there doesn't seem to be any access to electoral rolls for those dates online. Unless you know differently that is? Any help at all would be gratefully received.

Hi Dawnsh,

I just spotted your last post. I don't know how I missed it but I did. Thank you so much for that. Sheffield is a very long way away from where I live now. I shall have to get my thinking cap on.

Oh Hugh you are a star. I have absolutely no proof that Edward Stevenson existed other than on my mother's birth certificate. I was also not certain that it might in fact be Stephenson rather than Stevenson. You have answered both these questions. I'm really struggling with finding out more about him which is why I wanted to look at electoral rolls. My mother was born at 72, Rangeley Road in 1913 and from what you have found they did not stay there very long.
Thanks again.

Edward was also fined an unspecified amount in May for the same reason (reported in the Star on 21 May)

What was your grandmother's name? and what occupation was listed for Edward?

Hi Hugh,

Edward Stevenson appears on the b/c of my mother (1913) and her 3 siblings 1916, 1918, and 1921). My gran called herself Mrs Stevenson but I can find no trace of a marriage. His occupation on the certs is mechanical engineer.
Do you know if he would have had to appear in person in court to hear the judgement? There's a part of me which has been thinking that my gran might have made him up for the sake of respectability. Her name was Edith Annie Toulson.
I did try myself to find anything in The Star but living in Dorset as I do it's not too simple. I do appreciate this info you've given me. Many thanks.

Another question has come to mind Hugh and that is - did you happen to notice if his age was given in the newspaper report. As I mentioned, because I can find no marriage details I have no idea of his age and I would need that to trace a birth certificate. There are quite a few possibilities but none match with the occupation of mechanical engineer. It would be a great help to know.

Sorry there were no ages in those newspaper reports. They were simply lists of names and addresses of those fined and, in the first case, the amount of the fine.
