Water Houses, Leaper Street
« on: Friday 03 July 15 23:47 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about the Water Houses in Leaper Street please? My 2nd and 3rd great grandfather's lived there in the 1861 census and I haven't found much information about the houses. Thanks.

According to adverts in the Derby Daily Telegraph it is shown as Waterhouses (one word) Leaper Street. It makes a difference when searching.

When offered together for sale in 1875 they were described as 5 houses "known as the Water Houses  each containing one room up and one down with the yard, garden and other appurtenances thereto belonging". The sitting tenants then were Parker, Foster, Wright, Bamford and Hill.

Maxwell Craven says they were originally Water cottages - probably named because there was the brook nearby (the Markeaton Brook?) - anyway, they were five pairs of back to backs - all being cleared in the 60s.
But he says Leaper Street was perhaps called Damside before being extended to Watson Street - named after a local alderman.
Don't know if that helps at all.

You can see Water Houses on the Derby Town Plan at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/434366/336798/13/100155 you may have to zoom out.

Thank you all. I hadn't thought of looking at old maps. That was most helpful so thank you. I was intrigued why they were called Water Houses.
