Looking for Colin McLaren
« on: Sunday 05 July 15 12:27 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm a newbie here. I live in Texas.
I've been trying for years to trace my McLaren family roots in Scotland. I have some info ~ not much.
Here is what I know for certain :
* My great grandfather, Colin David McLaren, was baptized in West OR Old Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland on 17 Nov 1847.
I have that confirmed.
I would like to know his exact birth date and where.
*  His father ~ my g-g grandfather, Colin McLaren was born about 1820 in or near Greenock.
I would like to know his exact birth date and where.
And I would like to know the names of his parents.  Not a clue there.
*  His mother ~ my g-g grandmother, Catherine Black (McLaren) was born about 1818 in Scotland.
I would like to know her exact birth date and where.
And I would like to know the names of her parents. Not a clue there either.
*  All 3 plus Colin David's brothers, John and Laughlin, emigrated to America about 1849 along with Catherine's brother, Duncan Black and his wife, Sarah Livingstone, and their 2 children, Laughlin and Mary Black.
Everyone originally came to Illinois and then settled in Kansas after the US Civil War.

I would be so grateful for any help !
I am planning a trip to Scotland in 2018, and would like to know where I might visit my McLaren ancestors' original homestead !

Does his baptism record not also give his birth date?

Had a few odd credits left - Colin David McLaren born 28/10/1847, bp.17/11/1847 Greenock Old or West, son of Colin McLaren, Labourer and Catherine Black.

Also tried to view that for Colin senior but image that came up was for baptisms in April not May!   Have contacted SP and hopefully will get the correct page in due course.

I can be reached directly at my email (*).
My utmost apologies to you, Annette7, Skoosh, blemdookie, and sancti, for my long belated thanks for your very helpful responses to my request for info about my 2xg-grandfather, Colin McLaren ! Somehow your responses never reached my emailbox, and I only now 6 months later have serendipitously stumbled across this thread again !  Now I've hit another brick wall in my attempt to find Colin and his wife Catherine (nee Black) and their 3 boys - John, Laughlin, and Colin David - on any passenger list arrival in the US. I do find Catherine's brother, Duncan Black, and his wife Sarah (nee Livingston), and their 2 children - Laughlin and Mary - on the ship Charles-Saunders departing Liverpool and arriving in New York on 3 Jul 1849, but I do not find my McLarens on that ship nor on any others departing UK in 1849. They show up in the 1850 census of the US state of Illinois, but I cannot locate their immigration info.  I know that often (as in the case of Sarah Livingston Black) wives will be listed by maiden name, but I don't find Catherine Black anywhere either. If there is anyway I can repay you for your help to me, please don't hesitate to ask. I cannot thank you enough !
