Somerset: Henry HABERFIELD, Born 1834/35, Taunton St.Mary Magdalen

Hello,

This gentleman appears in 2 Census returns 1841 and 1851, the latter as "H.H." being an inmate at Parkhurst Prison from where he was released on 10/04/1854.  He did not re-offend.  He apparently died in the 3rd quarter of 1872 in Taunton, aged 38 (LDS Familysearch).

I cannot find details for him in 1861 and 1871 which tally with his place of birth being Taunton to check whether there was a wife/children.......Walton (Walcott?) are mentioned as possibilities, but these are geographically some fair distance from Taunton.

Any help please ???

You say born 1834/5 but it looks to me as though he is likely to be the Henry John Haberfield baptised on 22nd September 1833 at St Mary, Taunton to James (a carpenter) and Jane, of Eastreach - is that the one?

Are you sure he was released into the community, and not transported? I see that his original sentence in 1850 was to 7 years' transportation.

FreeCEN/Ancestry has him born in 1834 but your details are definitely correct, showing his father James a Journeyman Carpenter and his mother Jane a Staymaker.

I also had a PM suggesting he was enumerated on the 1861 and 1871 Wales Census, which I had seen earlier but raised doubts because of his birthplace being Walton (Walcott). ???

What was his occupation?

Are these the censuses you refer to for Wales

The Welsh references are correct but the places of birth quoted are a considerable distance from Taunton and thus the doubts.

His last known occupation was "Labourer".
