Gothic Hall, Greenwich in 1891
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 18:38 BST (UK) »
My great x 2 Uncle, Samuel Barwell, was admitted to Greenwich Workhouse, Woolwich Road, in May 1891, and gives Gothic Hall as his address.

Can anyone tell me what this was?

thanks for reading

A spot of googling suggests it was a lodging-house with coffee-rooms in Deptford Broadway.

I think 'Gothic Hall' may well be a reference to the design, but have a look at this link

Thank you to everyone for your interest - as you all have found, more specific googling brings up the landlord of the Gothic Hall coffee shop and his activities.

I had lost my greatx2 uncle and with the addition of the Workhouse Admissions and Discharge records on Ancestry, I've now managed to find him - and pretty distressing it is.

Haven't found his death yet, but he seems to have had a pretty poor time of it.

Whilst he was in and out of the workhouse, his two sisters were married and had families.  Ironically his stepfather and mother were in 1881 and 1891 in the Farnborough Union Workhouse, but his stepfather was actually employed there as a baker.

But I suppose there was no money to spare to support another family member.
