Frontline, Did your grandfather have any brothers in WW1 with him? Is there a photo of your grandfather you'd be happy to put up on this thread?

Hi early bird, my grandfather had two cousins in the war. George Stringer was killed at Gallipoli and his brother Charles was repatriated home after being wounded in France. I would be more than happy to post a photo of grandpa, give me a few days to find something suitable.  Regards Frontline.

With the discovery of Catalina A24-25 near Cairns this week, my interest has been re-newed in the disappearance of A24-49 in April 1944, in which my father-in-law's brother was a crew member.
Catalina A24-49 Crew:
Pilot P/O Warwick Neville Rose, 400939 - 2nd Pilot F/O Allan Roger Meakin, 418142 - Navigator F/Sgt Lenard William Stringer, 419679 - W/AG F/Sgt Alexander John Hine, 415327 - W/AG F/Sgt James William Willesden, 427052 - W/AG F/Sgt Joseph Bass Miller, 406811 - Flight Engineer Sgt Alfred Harvey Brooks Wadham, 28840 - Flight Engineer Sgt Herbert John Alexander Coates, 35037 - Air Gunner Sgt Philip Charles Carter, 34396 - Air Gunner Sgt George Wise Whitley, 41312.

“A Mystery Unsolved...The Loss of Catalina A24-49”
Towards the end of WWII, in 1944, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Catalina "Maggie" A24-49, took off from northern Australia on a routine mission over enemy territory in the Dutch East Indies. The aircraft, with ten crew on board, vanished without a trace. For family members of those crewmen, this remains an enduring mystery. This book has been largely written and researched by historian Bob Alford, at the instigation of the nephew of the missing Catalina pilot, Tony Morgan. The book includes a thorough background on RAAF Catalina operations during WWII. Order your copy of this excellent book please contact Tony Morgan.

What wonderful photos Frontline! Your grandfather was a fine looking man.

For some reason the last 2 posts did not come through to my email so it's by sheer luck that I'm checking RC while waiting for something else to load.

Alan Penno's post is interesting. Strange how things pan out....

Hi Stringerk,
You have written

any information re their father father Robert stringer who was born in arklow ireland

Do you mean father's father (in other words grandfather)
OR
did you accidentally write the word father twice?

Sue
