Forfarshire Militia 1790/1800s - Sinclair and Millar
« on: Thursday 09 July 15 03:16 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am in Australia and hoping someone may be able to tell me how to search records of the Forfarshire Militia around 1804.
My 3rd gr grandparents married in Brechin in 1804 and their marriage registration states John Sinclair was a private in the Forfarshire Militia.  I am hoping I can find some enlistment details with birth date and place and/or parents names, as I have not otherwise been able to find his birth, nor death.  He married Isabel Millar and the marriage registration states her father was David Millar, shoemaker of Brechin, deceased.  I have not been able to find her death either, nor her birth as there appears to be a few choices with David as being fathers.
They appear to have had 4 children, Isabel 1805, John 1809 and Anne 1823.  A 4th - Margaret - I cannot find her birth, but can only go on the fact that in 1838 she married Donald McDonald in Brechin as Margaret Sinclair, and in the 1841 census  (aged 25 so born approximately 1816), Isabel Snr and young Ann are living with Donald and Margaret in Brechin.  Isabel snr notes her age as 55 so born approx. 1786.
By the 1851 census, Donald is shown as a widow and Isabel Snr is no longer living with the household.  Ann however is - and Donald and Ann start having children together.
If anyone can help me pin down John Sinclair and Isabel Millar's births deaths and hopefully parentage I would be grateful.
Thank you
Anne

I am researching a man who was in the Forfar Militia too,
I posted a question this evening in this Angus forum.

You could try searching his name in the National Archives, Kew online
(the Militia men received pensions -you may find his name, rank, years served...)
"Royal Hospital, Chelsea: Disability and Royal Artillery Out-Pensions, Admission Books"
at http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14324

And here's where they were based http://www.pglforfarshire.org/Forfar_Kincardine_Militia.html

Also search for his name in this long list:
http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/nmsruntime/saveasdialog.asp?lID=47492&sID=15131

The Angus Archives may be able to help, I see they mention that they hold
the "Forfarshire Militia Oath Book, 1822"  MS142
http://archive.angus.gov.uk/historyaa/features/2006-01-forfarresources.htm
They have a research service:
http://archive.angus.gov.uk/historyaa/archives/services/genealogy/researchservices.htm

I guess you are also using Ancestry to construct a tree?
That's where I discovered the hint that mine received a pension, but transcription was
poor so I hunted and found the orginal written documents at the National Archives,Kew
(the first link I suggested)
Good luck

PS did a quick search on ScotlandsPeople could this be your Isabel?

Isabel Millar b 26 Feb 1775 Brechin, Angus parents David Milllar and Elizabeth Wood

possible death (date matches birth) MILLAR, ISABEL 89 1862 322/ 9 Tealing, Angus
Tealing is about 21 miles south west of Brechin.

1841 census - someone on Ancestry has provided the original census image
in their tree - shows Isabella age abt 55 (erroneously under ditto McDonald)
living with her married daughter Margaret and husband Donald McDonald,
and end column tick confirms Isabella born in Angus.
If you sub to ancestry, it's easy to see this shared census once you enter
Isabel Millar b 1775 Brechin into your tree - and look at the hints,
and there are several trees with various records.

1851 census shows Isabella age 69 born Brechin, living in Brechin
with daughter Ann Gibson Sinclair (b1823) and widowed
Donald McDonald (his wife Margaret Sinclair is deceased)
plus his two children. Also 2 other names, maybe relations.

Cannot find Isabel in the 1861 census.
Suggest the death record may be correct, and purchasing
from ScotlandsPeople for 6 credits to view, might be informative.

Hello Winnie

Thank you for that

I had a look at my Ancestry tree and see I had already put David Millar and Elizabeth Wood in my tree but don't think I thought I could prove it.  I had Isabel living with the Macdonald family in the 1841 and 1851 census and as she was no living with them in the 1861 census presumed she had died in that intervening period.  Thank you for the details on the death.  I will certainly look into it.
