Trying to obtain as much information regarding my G G Grandfather he moved to Liverpool from Ireland.  I only have the following details:  Patrick Ryan DOB @1841 Born Roscommon Trade: Greengrocer. I obtained the details from the English census of 1891.  I hope that someone could add some meat to the bones or could send me to the right database to research..  PS. at some stage he married Anne Ryan DOB 1845 Born County Mayo     Thanks Keith

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Thanks Hallmark.  I have looked at the 1841 birth year he is not recorded so I will have to check years either side of 1841.

Hi Keith

Have you gotten his marriage cert to get his father's name ?

Is he on the 1911 Census to hopefully get a better location than just Roscommon.

What religion was he as NLI only have Catholic records.

Say he was a Catholic, we'd need his father's name, his mother's name (including maiden name), and then we'd need an exact townland that he was born in.

The townland would be for us to check if the registers for that area still exist.

I'm afraid that what info that you have at the moment is not enough to look for an ancestor in Ireland.

Tara

PS This also applies to your Tierney thread !

Hi Tara, Thank you for your prompt reply.  I understand what you are saying.  I shall take a look at the marriage and birth certificates that I have in my possession.  I could not find them in the 1911 census.  Their Daughters marriage certificate in 1899 had Patrick (father) as deceased. I will investigate further.  Keith

Sorry to be putting a downer on your research but do as much digging in the UK first.

Baptism, marriages, deaths, obits, possible family living nearby on census, possible family members on BDM etc etc

Anything to get some leads at all !

Tara

Tara, No do not worry at least you are giving me pointers.  Over he weekend I will fully investigate in the UK.  I do know that Patrick and Anne Ryan in 1891 in Liverpool they had listed a Bridget Mckenn ?? a domestic servant  born County Mayo DOB: 1843.  I will look at others living around them on the various census ledgers.   Do you know I have traced my mum other side of the family from the Faroe Islands and to Greenland.  But I am finding tracing her other 2 sides of the Irish side so hard going. I may take a trip to the record office in Dublin?  Keith

Just thinking

re Ryan & Tierney, one a greengrocer and one a butcher.

Both would have had a certain standing in their areas.

Try trawling their local newspapers for mentions  ;D

You never know where a lead will crop up.
