Well, a pretty compelling argument for a remarriage after death of first wife methinks. I will follow this one up and see what the results are. Thank you one and all.

While looking at all your suggestions, I realised that I had completely missed another similar situation. This time with Samuel Carline Slack himself. Looking at his children on the 1871 Census for Ambergate (Parish of Heage, Derbyshire), he had at least three children before he married Maria Williams on 10th September, 1866, Henrietta abt. 1856, Robert abt. 1862, and Sarah abt. 1865.

Possible first wife and therefore possible mother maybe Martha Jackson, but more research needed to confirm!

I have not yet found him and his family on the 1861 Census, probably an incorrect transcription is hiding him from me.

Thanks again,

Alan

I may be getting confused but I would have thought that his second marriage was to Sarah GREEN in 1857?

And his first marriage was to Martha JACKSON in 1854. She dies in 1856? so is the mother of Henrietta.

My head is beginning to spin. So now it looks as if my Samuel Carline Slack may have been married, not once, or even twice, but three times ... maybe.

I am nigh convinced that his first wife 'was' Martha Jackson (1833-1856), and now a 'second' wife .... a Sarah ?, who may also have died, because I know that he marries again, this time to Maria Williams, on 10th September 1866, at Milford. This third marriage looks to have endured, because he goes on to have at least five more children with Maria, who looks to have come into the marriage, with a son of her own, Willoughby Williams, born 1859.

I am going to have to sit down in a darkened room, with a refreshing cup of strong coffee, so that I can begin to sort all these surprises out, and fill in the current dates & places blanks.

What I have also just noticed, thanks to all you wonderful people, is that on the 1861 Census there is mention of a daughter, who again I suspect has been partly mistranscribed. She is transcribed on Ancestry as Mary E E Slack, aged 1. But looking on FamilySearch.org I have found a 'Mary Elizabeth Carline Slack' - and so we appear to have come full circle (remembering that the first post in this thread was about finding Samuel Carline Slack's parents). I feel sure that the two middle names given to Mary, born 1859, pretty well ties down the orginal Samuel's first wife, as Elizabeth Carline, not Sarah ? - will still follow it up though.

Now back to my darkened room, looking to confirm Samuel C Slack's 2nd wife's information  :)

Regards,

Alan
