Could someone please help me identify this crest on a piece of silver
« on: Saturday 11 July 15 03:32 BST (UK) »
Hi all

My first post and hoping that someone out there can help me.

The date of the silver piece is 1835, so I hope this can help.

From the basics I have done and I am probably completely wrong, I believe it could be a Duke due to the crown and it looks a lot like part of the Duke of Somerset crest.  All help is very welcome and please put me on the straight and narrow.

THANK-YOU for any help you provide.

Mark

Could be something to do with the Dukes of Buckingham - this is a very old crest of theirs

which is very similar to yours

However if you think the bird is a duck it could be for Aylesbury Vale District Council

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

The bird on the helmet looks like a peacock-- the little crest of feathers on its head.

Could you look at a copy of Burke`s Peerage in a library or perhaps it is online.

It could be a phoenix as it seems to be rising from flames.
Best of luck.   Viktoria.

Have you deciphered the hallmark? Is there a makers mark? Which town? If it was a good maker the firm may a) still be in existence or b) have been amalgamated into another firm.

What is the piece? Is it part of a set or an individual piece?

There are a number of member firms in the London Silver Vaults

The Goldsmiths Company may also be able to give advice

This post is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws. Unfortunately my preferred method of writing (Parker Quink on Basildon Bond) cannot be used.

closed armour helmet, with crown/coronet and bird is often found in Hugenot/French coat of arms ... Daniel Perrin for example had a symbol very similar, so French might be an avenue worth exploring (especially if no assay marks are discernible)

Good luck :)
